PNP SETS HARD LOCKDOWN ON NCR RESIDENTS

METRO Manila residents who are outside the National Capital Region will not be allowed to return to their homes during the two-week COVID-19 lockdown that began Friday, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Guillermo Eleazar said. IGHT areas in Metro Manila and 20 others in several regions have been put under Alert Level 4 due to the high number of COVID-19 cases and their high hospital occupancy rate. The announcement from the Department of Health (DOH) came as 10,623 new COVID-19 cases were reported, the highest in almost four months. Alert Level 4 means an area has been classified as a moderate- to critical-risk with a health care utilization rate higher than 70 percent. Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said the eight Metro Manila areas under Alert Level 4 are Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Pateros, Quezon City, Taguig, Malabon, Makati, and San Juan. THE TIME SCULPTURE AT SM MEGAMALL

There’s a new landmark in EDSA with the unveiling of the Time Sculpture at SM Megamall. The towering 12-meter work made of mirror stainless steel is designed by Filipino-American public artist Jefre. It depicts a man looking at his watch, a reminder that time is valuable and should be used productively. The Time Sculpture is the latest public art piece in SM’s premier malls, which include the iconic globe at the SM Mall of Asia, the Cube at SM City Seaside Cebu, National Artist Arturo Luz’s Cubi at the Podium, and the colorful Philippine animals at the Skypark at SM Aura Premier.

THE Department of Budget and Management said it has released P10.89 billion to cover the cash assistance to families affected by the COVID-19 lockdown that began Aug. 6 in the National Capital Region but Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso said they have yet to receive the funds. “There was a press release that there would be cash aid... but mayors still don’t have the cash on hand,” Domagoso said. Earlier, Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año said cash aid distribution for some 10.7 million residents of Metro Manila would likely begin on Friday, Aug. 6, the first day of the lockdown. But his undersecretary, Jonathan Malaya, said the distribution of cash assistance, which he described as a “logistics challenge,” would likely begin next week. Next page
