Duterte, Austin renew commitment to bilateral ties By Joyce Pangco Pañares VISITING United States Defense chief Lloyd Austin and President Rodrigo Duterte renewed their commitment to further bilateral security cooperation between the Philippines and the US. Austin’s two-day official visit coincides with 75th anniversary

of establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries and the 70th anniversary of the signing of the Mutual Defense Treaty. Prior to his arrival in the Philippines – America’s oldest treaty ally in Asia – the Pentagon chief criticized Beijing’s excessive claims in the South China Sea, saying these have “no basis in international

law.” “It was a good meeting,” Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana told Manila Standard. He did not elaborate. However, he said the draft side pact to the Visiting Forces Agreement was not on the table during Austin’s courtesy call on the President.

“It is not part of the agenda,” Lorenzana added. In a pre-SONA forum last week, Lorenzana said aside from extending the VFA with the US, the Philippines will sign an addendum or side agreement to the treaty. “The VFA will not be changed. There will be a side agreement to

This as the Department of Health (DOH) said the Philippines’ COVID-19 risk classification is now back to “moderate” from the previous low risk as growth in cases swelled in the past two weeks. “Such restrictions include no dine-in services and other measures to prevent the Delta variant [from spreading]. We are suggesting this based on the assessment on the ground,” said Abalos in a Zoom meeting with reporters. “If possible, let’s do away with dinein and go with take-out for now. Let’s restrict the mobility of people,” he said in a mix of English and Filipino. On Wednesday, the Metro Manila

Council asked the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) to put the National Capital Region under an Enhanced Community Quarantine to prevent the spread of a more transmis-

Marcial wallops foe, sends strong message By Riera Mallari

TOKYO – Let this be a warning to all middleweight boxing contenders at the Summer Olympic Games here – Eumir Marcial packs a wallop. “He is more powerful now,” said the Philippine Boxing Team’s

Olympic Head Coach Don Abnett after Marcial won a shortened bout against Algerian Younes Nemouchi via a Referee Stopped Contest due to Injury (RSC-I) at 19 seconds of the first round to advance to the quarterfinals of the 69-75kg boxing competition at the Kokugikan Arena. Experts see need to raise immunity goal amid Delta By Willie Casas and Joel E. Zurbano MEMBERS of the Vaccine Expert Panel (VEP) on Thursday said there is a need to raise the country’s target from 70 percent, to 99 or even 100 percent, for herd immunity from COVID-19 because of the threat of the highly contagious Delta variant. “We need to aim higher and do it faster... This Delta variant is a real concern,” VEP head Dr. Nina Gloriani said in a Department of Health (DOH) forum. Gloriani said the goal should be to vaccinate “100 percent” of the population. “For us to get a better immunity at the population level, maybe we should increase our target in a scenario where we have the Delta variant,” VEP member Dr. Rontgene Solante added. Finance chief thumbs down tax exemption for ‘winners’ By Julito G. Rada, Maricel V. Cruz FINANCE Secretary Carlos Dominguez III said Thursday he is not amenable to proposals in Congress to tax-exempt the re-

wards and gifts given to weightlifting gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz and other potential winners in the current Olympic Games, saying everyone has a duty “to share in the cost of the provision of public goods to society.”

This was Dominguez’s reaction when asked by reporters to comment on the bills filed in the two houses of Congress to give tax exemption to the gifts and rewards given to Diaz for her unprecedented feat in the Olympics being held

in Tokyo, Japan. “No,” Dominguez replied. “ All Philippine citizens and residents have an obligation to share in the cost of the provision of public goods to society,” he explained.
