RESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte’s final State of the Nation Address today is a report card centered on the accomplishments of his administration, Malacañang said Sunday.

But for Duterte, he will let the people judge his works for themselves. “All I want is the people to just look around. This, like that, I won’t boast. Firstly, that’s not my money (used to build these projects),” said Duterte. “I will just mention what were the

projects completed without necessarily attributing the miracle to me. I worked for the government, I just worked, so I have nothing to boast about,” he added. However, opposition Senator Risa Hontiveros said “death, misogyny, and Next page

By Rio N. Araja HOUSE Majority Leader and Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez on Sunday lauded President Rodrigo Duterte for a “job well done” ahead of his final State of the Nation Address as Chief Executive today. Romualdez said the President has accomplished more than what is expected of him as he expressed hope that Duterte takes his time to spell out all the achievements of his administration in the past five years during Monday’s SONA. “Job well done. No matter where you are on the political divide, one will agree that this President accomplished more than we expected of him,” he stressed. “He blazed a new trail in public service that had never been taken by our political leaders in the past. He could have achieved more were it not for the COVID-19 pandemic that has shaken even the major economies of the world,” Romualdez said. He cited some of the President’s major legacies, such as the passage of the Universal Healthcare Act, the free college education law, and reforms in Next page

INDEPENDENT researchers tracking the COVID-19 pandemic said Sunday Metro Manila is already in the early stages of a coronavirus surge most likely because of the Delta

variant as the Department of Health reported 55 new cases of the more transmissible strain. The new cases involving the virulent strain brought the total number of Delta infections to 119. Of the 55, one has died while the rest have been tagged as recovered. Seventeen involved returning over over-

Pinay weightlifter to put on a show, coach vows By Riera U. Mallari

Hidilyn Diaz

TOKYO—You ain’t seen nothing yet from Olympic silver medalist Hidilyn Diaz. The Filipina weightlifter’s strength and conditioning coach in Julius Naranjo made this promise. “You will expect Hidilyn to lift weights that you’ve never seen before. She’s

on track. She’s going to put on a show,” Naranjo said. Diaz tries to better her 2016 silver medal in Rio when she shoots for the gold in the 55-kg division of the weightlifting competitions on Monday at 7 p.m. at the Tokyo International Forum here. “It’s a lot of pressure,” Diaz, who is competing in her fourth Olympics said before flying to Tokyo.

In her path is Chinese world record holder Liao Qiuyun of China, who many have tagged as the favorite in the 55-kilogram division. Naranjo added that Diaz has been hitting new personal marks this late in her career, a good sign as she prepares to bolster the Philippines’ medal hopes in the games. Next page
