TAAL EMITS KILOMETER-HIGH PLUME; ERUPTION FEARED; EVAC ALERT UP By Rio N. Araja THE Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has placed Taal Volcano under Alert Level 3 or magmatic unrest following an eruption that gave rise to a kilometerhigh phreatomagmatic plume at past 3 p.m. Thursday. Phivolcs said the main crater generated a short-lived 1 kilometer-high phreatomagmatic plume at 3:16 p.m.-- lasting 5 minutes – with no accompanying earthquake. In magmatic unrest, magma ascent towards the surface can lead to a magmatic eruption with potential for the formation of lava flows, pyroclastic flows, lahars, ash-fall and ballistics. Phivolcs recommended residents of Taal Volcano Island and high-risk barangays Agoncillo and Laurel to be evacuated due to possible hazards of pyroclastic density currents and volcanic tsunami. “The public is reminded that the entire Volcano Island is a Permanent Danger Zone, and entry into the island as well as high-risk barangays of Agoncillo and Laurel is prohibited,” it said. The Phivolcs also advised communities around Taal to take precautionary measures and to remain vigilant of possible lakewater disturbances. The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council in Calabarzon conducted an emergency meeting with other local government units after the eruption.

PH now low-risk: COVID attack rate dips By Willie Casas and Joel E. Zurbano

THE Philippines is now classified as a low-risk area for COVID-19 after the national case growth rate and average daily attack rate (ADAR) decreased, the Department of Health said Thursday. “Because we have a negative two-

week growth rate and we see that our ADAR is at moderate risk at 5.42, the risk classification nationally is already at low risk,” DOH Epidemiology Bureau director Dr. Alethea De Guzman said in an online forum. De Guzman said DOH data showed that the Philippines’ case growth rate fell to negative 9 percent during June

13 to 26 from 15 percent from May 30 to June 12. The national utilization rates of hospital and intensive care unit beds were also in the safe zone at 46.51 percent and 55.24 percent, respectively. The country averaged 5,772 new cases daily from June 24 to 30, which is Next page

VP run mere political posturing, says Du30

PARLADE QUITS TASK FORCE NEWS / A4

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte said the public should consider him as a possible vice presidential candidate in the 2022 national elections “at this time” even as he admitted that the push for him to run was mere “political posturing” by some who feared he would be treated as a “lame duck” leader. “That is only leverage in politics. You know what a lame duck is. That is posturing – political posturing so that they would not treat you badly because you are about to step down,” the President said during the sidelines of the inauguration of the LRT Line 2 East extension project yesterday. “Maybe at this time you can say that – maybe to maintain the equilibrium – consider me a candidate for the vice Next page
