LIKE RIZAL, 98 FRONTLINERS DIED FOR A NOBLE CAUSE

By Christine Cortez

A LITTLE over a year into the COVID-19 pandemic, at least 98 medical frontliners have died battling an invisible enemy – modern-day Jose Rizals all, as President Rodrigo Duterte

described the fallen heroes and their colleagues who continue to serve the nation and save lives. “Crises test people and during a pandemic, we need heroes and want heroism to be relevant. But not in the old fashion sense like being shot in the

back like Rizal,” said renowned Filipino historian Ambeth Ocampo in a television interview Thursday. “Heroes and heroism are not a thing of the past. They are in our midst in a different form or shape – like our medical frontliners,” he added.

Dr. Jose Rizal, the country’s national hero whose 160th birth anniversary is commemorated today (June 19), was a practicing physician who trained in ophthalmology. And in 1888, he himself Next page

DEMOLITION MAN. Fancy cars are lined up for destruction in Manila as they are found too hot to handle, being smuggled in by unscrupulous traders. Customs Commissioner Rey Guerrero leads the demolition of these precious haul of 21 autos valued at P58.5 million. In Cagayan de Oro, another batch of 14 hot cars are simultaneously destroyed in a twin move that Customs says will send a strong message that the government is relentless in its campaign to stop smuggling at the ports. Last February, the Customs destroyed a total of 17 smuggled vehicles.

Eleazar issued the statement in the wake of a Palace announcement that it was now official policy to require the wearing of face shields only in hospitals, despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the slow pace of vaccinations. The IATF recommended to President Rodrigo Duterte that the wearing of face shields remain mandatory. “The latest recommendation of the IATF to the President is to continue making mandatory the wearing of face shields in enclosed spaces, commercial areas, public transport, terminals, and even places of worship,” Eleazar said. Bicol demand for ICU beds at critical level; NCR low risk—DOH, OCTA By Willie Casas INTENSIVE care unit (ICU) beds in the Bicol region are filling up fast even as their usage in Metro Manila has declined, treatment czar and Health Undersecretary

Leopoldo Vega said Friday. In an interview on TeleRadyo, Vega said Metro Manila is now at a low risk position as its total health care utilization has gone down to 48 percent, even though there were pockets where the

coronavirus was still spreading. “The rate is low if you count the isolation beds, ICU, ventilators and COVID wards. If you disaggregate the ICU, that rate is lower at 51 percent. We’re in a lowrisk position, so Metro Manila is freeing

up more beds. Two months ago, ICUs were in critical and high-risk positions,” said Vega, even as the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) in Manila reported that its ICU was 90 percent filled. Next page
