HE Luzon grid will continue to suffer an insufficient supply of power until July 1, with rotating brownouts likely to persist until June 10, the Department of Energy (DOE) told a congressional hearing Friday.

"At the end of this week until next week, we see no power plant coming in, so we will remain below the red line,” said the director of the DOE’s Electric Power Industry Management Bureau, Mario Marasigan. “There are still insufficient reserves, so a red alert will still be raised.” Marasigan said about 2,000 megawatts of capacity were offline when the red and yellow alerts were raised last week as most power plants were on extended forced shutdowns. But Marasigan told the committee on energy headed by Rep. Juan Miguel Arroyo of Pampanga that the department

PHILIPPINE Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel Romualdez on Friday said an improved and “strengthened" version of the Visiting Forces Agreement with the US that allows Filipino and American soldiers to conduct military training and exercises was awaiting approval by President Rodrigo Duterte more than a year after he ordered its termination. Romualdez said President Duterte would decide anytime on whether Manila would renew the VFA following weeks of negotiation with Washington officials. "I know there has been improvement, a lot of time spent by both our countries, our panels on some of the things they want to improve in that agreement. We're going to be seeing vaccines in significant numbers arriving in the Philippines and countries all around the world," Embassy Chargé d'Affaires John Law said in a virtual briefing Friday. Law expects Manila's portion to be delivered "soon" but he did not provide a specific date, citing the logistical aspects that the White House

needs to sort out first. "The White House is currently looking at not only the logistical aspects but also, of course, each country may have different regulatory aspects, we're talking about different as well, so I think the White House needs a little bit of time to sort those out but I would expect the announcement very soon," he said. ALMOST 90 percent of adult Filipinos are worried that they may catch the deadly COVID-19, a Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey showed. In its latest report, the SWS also found that more people believed "the worst is yet to come" compared to late 2020. In November 2020, 91 percent of survey respondents said they were worried about catching COVID-19. Compared to past SWS surveys, worry about catching COVID-19 is much greater than worries about catching other viruses such as Ebola, Swine Flu, Bird Flu, and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The survey said that more Filipinos this year fear the pandemic will worsen. "We found a worsening outlook on the COVID-19 crisis as those fearing 'the worst is yet to come' with the COVID-19 crisis rose from 31 percent in November 2020 to 49 percent in May 2021. This is the highest since the 57 percent in July 2020," the pollster said. "Conversely, those saying 'the worst is behind us' fell from 69 percent in November 2020 to 50 percent in May 2021."
