HE country’s top diplomat unambiguously told Beijing where to go on Monday, as the government insisted Chinese vessels were still illegally lingering in the West Philippine Sea. “China, my friend, how politely can I put it? Let me see... O... GET THE FUCK OUT,” Foreign Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. tweeted. But just hours later, President Rodrigo Duterte said the dispute over the overlapping claims of the Philippines and China in the region is not a reason for Filipinos to be “rude and disrespectful” in an apparent dig at Locsin. “China remains to be our ben-
efactor and just because, if I may just add something to the narrative, just because we have a conf lict with China does not mean to say we have to be rude and disrespectful,” Duterte said in his weekly evening televised address. “As a matter of fact, we have many things to thank China for in the past and itong tulong nila ngayon (their help now),” he added. House panel OKs funding sources of Bayanihan 3 By Maricel V. Cruz and Macon Ramos-Araneta
THE House of Representatives committee on ways and means on Monday approved the provisions of the Bayanihan 3 that pertain to revenue generation to fund stimulus and aid programs under the proposed stimulus package.
Albay Rep. Joey Sarte Salceda, the committee chairman, said his committee hopes to “keep the fiscal deficit” in check by coming up with funding sources for the third Bayanihan package. The measure provides for a P420-billion fund to stimulate the nation’s economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. During the Committee’s regular
meeting on Monday, Salceda said the committee “bears in mind that we are now at high fiscal deficit levels.” Hence, he said, the committee has come up with provisions that will provide funding sources for the package without adding to the country’s borrowing. PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte, who once said journalists are legitimate targets for assassination if they do wrong, on Monday called for their protection against threats and intimidation as the nation marked World Press Freedom Day. The President recognized the vital role of a free and responsible press in the advancement of society, saying his administration could protect the media—even as killings and redtagging of members of the industry remained rampant under his rule. Duterte described press freedom as “a public good” and “an indispensable requirement with vibrant democracy.” “Let me assure everyone that this administration should remain committed in promoting press freedom as a vital component and indicator of progress anywhere in the world,” he said.
