Over a million already vaccinated, next in line for jabs bared THE Philippines has vaccinated more than 1 million people against COVID-19, the Palace said on Monday. “This is an important achievement,” presidential spokesman Harry Roque said in Filipino, as he reported that 1,007,356 people have received their first jab, while 132,288 have already received the two shots required. The government aims to inoculate 70
million people to achieve her immunity against COVID-19. Those who have received the vaccines include 965,169 out of the country’s 1.7 million health workers, who are at the top of the vaccination priority list. Most vaccine recipients are from Metro Manila, followed by Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Central Visayas, Davao Region, SOCCSKSARGEN, Ilocos, Northern
Mindanao, and Western Visayas regions, Roque said. The Philippine has received 2.5 million vaccine doses from China’s Sinovac Biotech, and 525,600 AstraZeneca doses from the World Health Organization (WHO)-led COVAX Facility. The government last week suspended the use of AstraZeneca for those below 60 years old, over reports of very rare
blood clots from the vaccine. But regulators cleared Sinovac's vaccine for use on seniors. The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA), meanwhile, said the next in line for jabs after health care workers, seniors and people with co-morbidities are workers with “high levels of interaction with or exposure to the public.” Next page
Shift to MECQ Muslims observe fasting in month-long Ramadan won’t assure 1m workers of jobs By Nash B. Maulana
By Othel V. Campos, Willie Casas and Maricel V. Cruz WHILE some 500,000 displaced workers are optimistic that they will get rehired as some industries reopen under the modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ), at least 1 million more remain uncertain about finding jobs, Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez said Monday. Lopez said the shift to MECQ is a planned and calibrated move to slowly and carefully open up essential sectors while increasing the capacity of sectors that remained open during the ECQ to 50 percent from 30 percent. “A big percentage of the economy will remain unopened, especially the high-risk and non-essential sectors to keep the infection rate at bay while doing our very best to lower the cases,” he said Monday. He said the economy suffered a big setback when the country was, for the second time, put on strict lockdown as new COVID-19 variants infected a good many of the population with new cases hitting more than 12,000 a day. “But we intend to reverse all of these. The government will continue to provide soft loans to businesses to keep them going in the midst of this pandemic. We will continue to provide assistance as what the The Department of Labor is doing for those without jobs. The manufacturing sector has resumed half of their capacities to drive the economy. We expect that the MECQ will encourage more businesses to resume operations,” Lopez said. Next page

HE United States is engaged in a form of “cognitive warfare” with China in the East and South China Sea, where both countries have deployed aircraft carrier strike groups, the South China Morning Post reported Monday. On Sunday, the US released a photo that showed one of its guided-missile destroyers, the USS Mustin, shadowing the Liaoning group, a move that analysts said was designed to send a clear message to the Chinese. The photo taken on Monday somewhere in the East China Sea showed the ship's captain, Commander Robert J Briggs, and his deputy commander Richard D Slye watching the Liaoning, which was just a few thousand meters away. "In the photo, Commander Briggs looks very relaxed with his feet up watching the Liaoning ship just a few thousand yards away, while his deputy is also sitting beside him, showing they take their PLA [People’s Liberation Army] counterparts lightly," said Lu Lishih, a former instructor at Taiwan's Naval Academy in Kaohsiung. "This staged photograph is definitely 'cognitive warfare' to show the US doesn't regard the PLA as an immediate threat,” the Post quoted Lu as saying. On Sunday, the Armed Forces of the Philippines announced it would hold joint military exercises with US troops over the next two weeks, amid growing tensions with Beijing in the South China Sea. The annual war games between the military allies were cancelled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. This year's event will be on a smaller scale than in previous years due to the health crisis, AFP chief Lt. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana said. About 700 US soldiers and up to 1,300 members of the AFP will take Next page
