RESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte has placed Metro Manila, Bulacan, Laguna, Rizal and Cavite under a weeklong Enhanced Community Quarantine -- the highest lockdown level -- starting Monday (March 29) until April 4 as the country continued to log more than 9,000 new COVID-19 cases.

“We are all homeliners again. We will return to ECQ because the number of people contracting COVID is too high -- almost 10,000 a day. Our critical care utilization is now under a red warning,” presidential spokesman Harry Roque said. “This will be a one week timeout for our medical frontliners,” he said. The on Saturday logged 9,595 new infections, bringing the total number of cases to 712,442, the Department of Health said. This marked the second consecutive day when more than 9,000 new cases were reported. Health Undersecretary Leopold Vega said the bed capacity of big hospitals in Metro Manila for COVID-19 patients has already reached “high risk” level. Under ECQ, the following restrictions will be put in place: - 11-hour curfew from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. - Public transportation will be allowed but at a limited capacity based on guidelines to be issued by the Department of Transportation - Mass gatherings, including religious gatherings, are strictly prohibited. “Full stop (on public masses),” Roque said. This means the previous IATF resolution allowin a once-a-day mass with 10 percent capacity for the Holy Week will no longer push through. - Movements will be limited to Authorized Persons Outside Residence, those accessing essential goods and services, and workers in establishments allowed to operate. People aged below 18 and above 65, people with comorbidities, and pregnant women will not be allowed to go out, unless they need to either obtain essential goods and services or work in office. - Dining establishments for take-out and delivery only. - Essential priority construction projects shall be allowed subject to the guidelines to be issued by the Department of Public Works and Highways. - Private establishments offering essential goods and services, as well as media establishments, can operate at 50 percent capacity. - Other establishments that can adopt a skeleton workforce include dental clinics, optometry clinics, pharmacies, veterinary clinics, banks, money transfer services, telecommunications companies, manufacturing firms, funeral and embalming services, and security personnel. Roque said there will be a heightened presence of uniformed personnel to enforce community quarantine protocols. Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said staycations will also now be disallowed in areas under ECQ. “Do not panic. Do not lose hope. This is not the first time we are under ECQ. We assure you the government is ready and will help you,” Roque said.

much cash assistance per affected household will be released. Roque said placing Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Rizal and Bulacan will have a minimal impact on the economy since it will cover Holy Week holidays. Earlier this week, acting Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Karl Kendrick Chua

warned that imposing two weeks of a modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) in response to the current surge in COVID-19 cases would have resulted in a rise in the number of hungry people by 58,000 from the current 3.2 million. The number of unemployed would also increase by 128,500 from the current 506,000.

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte will spend his 76th birthday in Davao today (Sunday) but will head back to Manila immediately to witness the arrival of 1 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine bought from China’s Sinovac on Monday. Presidential spokesman Harry Roque said he has already applied for an exemption to the 10-person limit for gatherings under the Enhanced Community Quarantine for the vaccine arrival ceremony. “The President will attend the arrival of the Sinovac vaccines. That is a go,” Roque said. The country earlier received 1 million Sinovac doses donated by the Chinese government and 525,600 AstraZeneca

doses donated through the Covax Facility. Monday’s shipment will be the first batch of vaccines procured by the government. Earlier, Roque said Duterte wishes nothing more for his birthday than “the end to the pandemic.” “I’m sure the President wishes an end to this pandemic and he wants all of us to go back to our normal life. This means he wants the country to return to high growth rates yearly because his promise is a more comfortable life for all,” he said. Roque said the President is also determined to continue efforts to fulfil his campaign promise of providing a comfortable life for all Filipinos.

him he was okay and he slept well. But this morning they noticed that he had not yet woken up,” said Chaclag in a news radio interview. Early last year, BuCor officials signed a document for the release of Sanchez, saying the former mayor was automatically eligible for Good Conduct Time Allowance.

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte has proposed an increase in the volume of imported pork products to 350,000 metric tons from the present 54,210 MT, Malacañang said. “The Palace confirms that President Rodrigo Roa Duterte recommended the increase in the Minimum Access Volume (MAV) for pork by 350,000 MT, in addition to the current MAV of 54,210 MT for the year 2021,” presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said. The proposed MAV increase, Roque said, was meant to address rising food prices and boost pork supply in the country. “This is to immediately augment the supply of pork, stabilize increasing prices, and address the pressing issues on food security,” he said. The shortage of pork supply due to the African swine fever (ASF) outbreak prompted Duterte in February to approve the Department of Agriculture’s proposal to review the suggested increase in the country’s pork imports. The President’s proposed hike in pork imports will be relayed to Congress for its consideration. The increase in MAV will take effect, once lawmakers concur with Duterte’s recommendation. Last month, Duterte issued Executive Order No. 124 which sets a price cap of P270 per kg. for pork kasim and pigue, P300 per kg. for pork liempo, and P160 per kg. for dressed chicken until April 8. The DA has also submitted to the President a draft proclamation declaring a state of national emergency in the country to address the severe impact of ASF on the hog industry. In a memorandum dated March 17, Agriculture Secretary William Dar explained that the ASF has already spread to 12 regions, 40 provinces, 466 cities and municipalities, and 2,425 villages nationwide.

PH envoy: Be vigilant of 200 Chinese boats PHILIPPINE Ambassador to China Jose Santiago Sta. Romana urged Manila to be “vigilant” as Chinese ships continued to stay at the Julian Felipe Reef, describing the movement as a “matter of concern.” St. Romana told a public press briefing, they were closely monitoring the movement of some 200 ships supposedly present in the area due to bad weather. “What’s important is that we monitor and follow China’s next steps because according to them, they are seeking shelter from bad weather. Our goal is to monitor and see what the movement will be on the ground because they have assured that this is not a permanent situation and they are denying that there is militia,” he said. Earlier this week, President Rodrigo Duterte asserted the international court’s 2016 arbitral ruling favoring the Philippines against China’s massive claims in the disputed West Philippine Sea during his meeting with Chinese ambassador Huang Xilian, Malacañang said. The presidential assertion came as Armed Forces of the Philippines chiefof-staff, Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, ordered the deployment of additional Philippine Navy ships to bolster the conduct of maritime sovereignty patrols in the West Philippine Sea. The National Task Force on the WPS earlier raised the alarm about a Philippine Coast Guard report that around 220 Chinese fishing vessels, believed to be manned by Chinese maritime militia personnel, were sighted in line formation at the Julian Felipe Reef on March 7. On July 12, 2016, the special arbitral tribunal ruled in favor of the Philippines on most of its submissions. It clarified that it would not “... rule on any question of sovereignty over land territory and would not delimit any maritime boundary between the Parties.” Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said Duterte raised the issue when the Chinese envoy visited the President to greet him for his birthday. Duterte is turning 76 on March 28. “The President is not surrendering our sovereignty by not aggressively pursuing the arbitral ruling in our favor rendered by the Permanent Court of Arbitration,” he said. Sta. Romana added: “The lesson here is we have to be vigilant. Vigilance is the price of sovereignty. We should see if this (departure) is implemented. We have to heighten our vigilance,” Sta. Romana added. While Sta. Romana said the presence of the ships in the area was a “cause of concern,” he maintained that the public “does not have to panic,” saying China had promised to withdraw the ships once the weather improved.

Bill to criminalize vaccine line jumping proposed By Maricel V. Cruz

D

EPUTY Majority Leader and Quezon City Rep. Precious Hipolito Castelo proposed Saturday that vaccine line jumping and mishandling be criminalized, stressing she would file a bill to this effect on Monday. She said the bill would amend Republic Act 11525 or the COVID-19 Vaccination Program Act of 2021, which President Rodrigo Duterte signed last Feb. 6. “Vaccine queue jumping and mishandling, which results in wastage, should be considered criminal offenses and penalties should be imposed on offenders. There should be accountability,” she said. Castelo pointed out that both acts of wrongdoing “deny healthcare workers

and senior citizens, who are on top of the vaccine priority list, their COVID-19 shots, and consequently, their protection from the virus.” She added: “Mishandling also affects our timetable to back to normalcy and to hasten economic recovery. It is preventable and therefore cannot be made an alibi for incompetence or even stupidity.” She said both vaccine line skipping and wastage could jeopardize the country’s allocation of free 44 million doses from the World

Health Organization vaccine sharing facility. “Even if we buy from producers to replace wasted jabs, it would take time before they can supply us because their production for the immediate future has already been contracted and cornered by rich countries,” she said. Earlier, Castelo called for swift punishment for local officials and private individuals who have jumped the vaccine priority list, dislodging healthcare workers, who get the top priority, followed by senior citizens. As it turned out, according to Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra, the jumpers could not be held criminally liable because RA No. 11525 did not have penal provisions, except for those who falsified vaccination cards. But Guevarra said jumper-officials could be penalized administratively.

THE Pasay City General Hospital on Saturday announced it could no longer accept patients, saying all beds of the facility were fully occupied. PCGH Officer in Charge Dr. John Victor de Gracia said hospital’s intensive care units emergency room and the ward room for persons infected with coronavirus disease were in full capacity. “As of 12 noon (March 27), all the eight ICU beds and all the 28 regular beds for confirmed COVID-19 patients are 100 percent occupied,” said De Gracia. “There are still six confirmed cases

at the transition wards waiting to be transferred to our COVID-19 confirmed wards, and there are still five probable cases at ER waiting to be admitted at our transition wards,” said De Gracia. “The hospital is really saturated for positive patients,” he added. On Friday, the hospital management announced that De Gracia, himself, and 14 other health workers were tested positive for COVID-19 even after having been vaccinated earlier. But according to De Gracia, they were now in stable condition and were expected to recover soon. “Almost all of us are asymptomatic or with mild symptoms.

One is admitted as moderate risk. But he is fine,” he said. The 15 health workers tested positive include two doctors, four nurses, four nursing helpers, a medical technologist, a pharmacist and three administrative personnel. “Fortunately, we were vaccinated before we became infected. If it had happened before we were injected we might have had the situation become serious,” said De Gracia. The hospital management earlier issued a memorandum ordering the temporary closure of the hospital’s Out Patient Department Teleconsultation.

TOP industry leaders representing the country’s business groups have called for united action to sustain interventions to address gaps in the pandemic response and economic crisis. In a virtual weekend roundtable discussion hosted by the Stratbase Albert del Rosario Institute on “The Private Sector as a reliable partner to the government in economic recovery,” Stratbase Albert del Rosario Institute President Dindo Manhit, in his opening statement said: “I’ve long argued that the shared prosperity will be crucial in uplifting the lives of Filipinos, accelerating the country’s economic momentum and in helping rebuild the nation toward sustainable and resilient development.” Manhit said, “Economic solutions can address this if we can provide good jobs that can generate enough savings, that can allow people to overcome some of these social difficulties brought about by the pandemic beyond the health challenges. “I believe that the private sector can demand transparency and accountability in governance. We need to shape that environment.” Ayala Corporation Chairman Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala said, “If we will act in unison, work together, join forces and focus on some key areas where we can all make a difference, there’s absolutely no doubt in my mind that the private sector can be a massive generator of goodwill in our country and a solution to many of our problems.” He added: “I do believe that the private sector is a force for growth and a force for good. And if we continue to put our collective resources and determination, the task will be able to force multiply the growth and the good that we can do in nation building.” On the other hand, President of the Employers Confederation of the Philippines, Sergio Ortiz-Luis Jr.., expressed concern on the government’s response to the increasing rate of unemployment, and the slow re-opening of the economy which he said had hampered business operations of small and medium enterprises, and the big corporations. “Based on the very slow reopening of business with the medical and the military making decisions for the domestic economy, we see business recovery to start only next year,” said Ortiz-Luis Jr.

Businessmen call for unity in addressing COVID gaps

THE Supreme Court on Saturday extended physical closure of all courts in the National Capital Region and the provinces of Bulacan, Laguna, Cavite and Rizal until March 31 as part of a measure to control spread of COVID-19. In her first directive since assuming as Acting Chief Justice on Saturday following the early retirement of Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta, Senior Associate Justice Estela Perlas-Bernabe ordered that all hearings in all courts in `NCR Plus’ are temporarily suspended during this period, and throughout the Holy Week. The exception was “on urgent matters, such as but not limited to petitions, motions, and pleadings in relation to

bail and habeas corpus, promulgation of judgment of acquittal, reliefs for those who may be arrested and detained during this period, and other related actions that may be filed in relations to measures imposed at the local and national levels to address the declared health emergency.” Bernabe added: “In view of the alarming surge of COVID-19 and upon consultation with the members of the Court en banc, as well as heads of the concerned offices, the physical closure of all courts . . . in National Capital Region and nearby provinces of Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna and Rizal are hereby extended effective March 29 to March 31.: Also covered by the directive are the SC itself, Court of Appeals, Court of Tax Appeals, and Sandiganbayan.

SEVERAL health workers at the San Lazaro Hospital and East Avenue Medical Center earlier inoculated against COVID-19 still got infected with the disease despite getting a first dose. San Lazaro Hospital spokesperson Dr. Ferdinand de Guzman revealed that 39 of the 178 health workers vaccinated with Sinovac vaccine at their facility on March 3 still ended up catching the virus. “Some of those who received the first dose, they got overconfident and complacent because they thought all the while, since they got the first dose, they are already protected. And they were not careful,” De Guzman said. Their colleagues will be getting their second dose on March 31. The 39 who got infected, meanwhile, can still get the second dose once they recover from the disease. The hospital said they can get the second jab as late as 42 days after the first dose. This is despite the emergency use authorization (EUA) given to Sinovac indicating that the second dose should be given a month after the first. Those who got AstraZeneca but still contracted the disease could take a second vaccine up until the third month after the first. Health experts said COVID-19 vaccines take full effect two weeks after the second jab, but that does not prevent the patient from catching COVID-19 or from being infectious. The vaccines only protect patients from experiencing severe symptoms of the disease. Ten health workers at the East Avenue Medical Center will not be given a second dose after also getting infected with COVID-19. The new guidelines from the Department of Health said that these health workers will have take two more doses of the vaccine after 90 days.

North Korea accuses Biden of ‘provocation’ after missile test NORTH Korea threatened a further military build-up on Saturday in response to Joe Biden’s condemnation of this week’s missile launches, a weapons test that marked Pyongyang’s first substantive provocation since the US president took office. The nuclear-armed North has a long history of using weapons tests to ramp up tensions, in a carefully calibrated process to try to forward its objectives. Pyongyang had been biding its time since the new administration took office in Washington, not even officially acknowledging its existence until last week. But on Thursday it launched two weapons from its east coast into the Sea of Japan, known as the East Sea in Korea. Following the launch, Biden labelled the test a violation of UN resolutions and advised the isolated state against ramping up military testing, warning that “there will be responses if they choose to escalate.” Ri Pyong Chol, a leading official in North Korea’s missile program who supervised the test, said the president’s comments had revealed his “deep-seated hostility” to the regime. “Such remarks from the US president are an undisguised encroachment on our state’s right to self-defense and provocation to it,” Ri said in a statement published by state media outlet KCNA. Ri said Pyongyang was expressing its “deep apprehension over the US chief executive faulting the regular test fire, (an) exercise of our state’s right to self-defense, as the violation of UN ‘resolutions.’” “If the US continues with its thoughtless remarks without thinking of the consequences, it may be faced with something that is not good,” he added, warning that North Korea was prepared to “continue to increase our most thoroughgoing and overwhelming military power.” The comments came at a time when Washington is in the final stages of a policy review on North Korea, with signals of a firm line on denuclearization, sanctions and human rights. the generals ousted and detained civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi in February, triggering a major uprising demanding a return to democracy. Violent morning crackdowns by security forces thwarted some plans for fresh protests that had been called in various cities to coincide with the parade in the capital Naypyidaw. As troops carried torches and flags while marching alongside army vehicles, junta leader General Min Aung Hlaing again defended the coup and pledged to yield power after new elections. But he also issued another threat to the anti-coup movement that has gripped The nation has been in turmoil since the country since he took charge, warn-

Australia threatens WTO action as China hikes duty on wine AUSTRALIA’S trade minister threatened to take China to the World Trade Organization on Saturday over its “unjustifiable” decision to hike duties on Australian wine imports for up to five years. In the latest salvo between Beijing and Canberra, China’s commerce ministry announced levies ranging from 116.2 percent to 218.4 percent would be slapped on Australian wine imports from Sunday. Trade Minister Dan Tehan said the tariffs meant it was “basically impossible” for Australian wine to be competitive in the Chinese market. “This decision which has been taken by the Chinese government is extremely disappointing and completely unjustifiable,” Tehan told reporters in Melbourne. “We will be looking at next steps, and those next steps will include looking at taking this matter to the World Trade Organization.” On Friday, the Chinese commerce ministry said it was imposing the duties after an investigation found “dumping and subsidies on imported wines” from Australia impacted the Chinese market. Wine exports to China hit a record $900 million in 2019, according to Australian government data, making it the biggest market by value for the product. Late last year, Australia also called for the WTO to investigate Chinese tariffs on barley imports, following a series of economic sanctions or disruptions to Australian products to China’s vast market. Diplomatic relations between the two countries have reached their lowest since the deadly 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown. Many see the sanctions as retribution for Australia blocking Chinese investment in sensitive areas and publicly calling for an investigation into the origins of the coronavirus. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, speaking in Sydney, accused Beijing of using the tariffs as “retaliation.” AFP

Megaship blocking Suez Canal may now be refloated: owner THE owner of a megaship blocking Egypt’s Suez Canal hopes to refloat it as early as Saturday night as the crisis forced companies to re-route services from the vital shipping lane around Africa. The company aims to free the ship “tomorrow night Japan time” he added, the Nikkei said. “We are continuing work to remove

More than 13,000 flee violence in Colombia: UN report MORE than 13,000 civilians in Colombia have had to flee clashes between armed groups and government forces this year as violence once again flares in the restive country, according to a report to the UN Security Council. “The situation in the Pacific region is especially worrying,” UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said in the report, which was obtained by AFP on Friday. “Thousands of civilians are stuck in the crossfire between illegal armed actors and law enforcement.”

Of the 13,422 people who have been displaced this year, 5,574 are minors, the report said. Colombia is currently experiencing the worst violence the country has seen since the 2016 peace accord between Bogota and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) group ended a halfcentury civil war. Workers have begun using machinery that can remove pulverized rocks in a bid to free the ship on Saturday, when the canal will be at high tide. Egypt train collision kills 32 A COLLISION between two trains killed at least 32 people and left more than 160 injured Friday in southern Egypt, a country plagued by fatal rail accidents widely blamed on crumbling infrastructure and poor maintenance. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi pledged tough punishment for those responsible for the crash. Medical reinforcements were routed from Cairo and more than a hundred ambulances were mobilized to transport the injured to hospital from the scene in the Tahta district of Sohag province, 460 kilometers south of the capital. The health ministry gave an updated casualty toll of at least 32 dead and 165 people hospitalized with injuries, 70 percent of them fractures. Dozens of technicians were working through Friday evening to remove five dislocated and damaged train wagons, an AFP correspondent on the scene said. “We were at the mosque then a child came and told us (about the incident). We heard the collision, so we rushed and found the carnage,” said one witness, speaking on condition of anonymity. “The first ambulances arrived around half an hour after the explosion... there were children who removed (debris) using wooden ladders,” the source, who spent the day helping the rescue workers, said. Surveillance camera footage of the accident seen by AFP showed a carriage being violently thrown into the air in a cloud of dust when a speeding train rammed into another as it rolled slowly down the tracks. Twisted metal jutted from the wreckage as dozens of people gathered around the overturned carriages. Harrowing images from inside one of the carriages posted on Facebook showed people screaming for help as they tried to free themselves from the wreckage. “People are dying. Where are the authorities? Help us,” one young man shouted repeatedly. A video showed another man covered in dust trapped by twisted metal under what could have been the aisle of the carriage. “Our train suddenly stopped and a quarter of an hour later, the second arrived and struck us. I saw it coming, screamed, then found myself on the ground in great pain,” Kamel Nagi, a 20-year-old conscript who suffered multiple broken bones, said. AFP

Japanese scientists discover fabric spray against coronavirus

Hatquarter shipping manager Amabel Cale

Women drive success of Cebu manufacturing INTERNATIONAL Women’s Month in the Philippines is a time that celebrates the many roles of women as thinkers, doers, leaders and forces to be reckoned with, no matter what hat they put on. In Cebu, the Queen City of the South, two women have been at the forefront of their companies’ pandemic response in the manufacturing sector, continuing to drive success despite the challenges brought about by the current times. The manufacturing industry requires skill, a meticulous eye for details and dedication. These are the exact qualities that Amabel Cale, shipping manager of high-quality headwear produced by Hatquarter, found in her team that is dominated by women. She attests that Hatquarter is able to live up to its renowned quality, thanks to the women who craft each headwear with utmost detail and precision. “The quality of product that we have maintained for many years now is thanks to the workmanship of many women in the company,” Cale said. Having been with the company since 2014, overseeing Hatquarter’s shipping team in ensuring documentation and import compliance for customers in more than 70 countries, Cale saw firsthand the unique qualities of ‘girl power’ and how this contributed to delivering quality products. “What I observed is that our women workers’ meticulousness down to the smallest detail has been the biggest factor behind our product excellence. Just by looking at our product, each of them can determine if there is a mishandling happening,” Cale said. Empowering women Another manufacturing company echoes the same applaud for its women-led workforce. Corazon Aurora Lynn “Jing” Arcamo, Cebu distribution center manager of TMX Philippines, makers of the world-renowned TIMEX watches, takes pride in her organization that comprises mostly women from senior management to production. “Women in our organization have been very prominent and outspoken in leading their respective teams and delivering key results. Their patience and attention to detail are traits that enable our products to achieve the highest quality standards. Their detailed and advanced planning skills ensure excellence in daily operational executions and targets achieved,” Arcamo said. Arcamo emphasized how TMX Philippines realized the importance of inclusivity in making the organization a better place to work. Arcamo, already serving two decades in the company, also shapes guidelines and policies to further promote positivity among its workers. “My team handles warehousing, production, packaging and shipment operations for local and international distribution, but aside from operational excellence, I also ensure that my workers, mostly women, are empowered to work,” Arcamo said. “I’m proud that TMX has a heart that listens and feels the sentiments of the population makes the organization a conducive place to work which we even call our second home.”

UNAHCO teams up with DA to revive swine industry By Othel V. Campos A PRIVATE company signed a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Agriculture to contain the African Swine Fever outbreak which decimated the hog population in several provinces. Univet Nutrition and Animal Healthcare Company president and chief operating officer Ricardo Alba said the partnership would strengthen the government’s programs in controlling the spread of the disease and revive the badly-hit swine industry. “It’s been two years since ASF came to the Philippines. And based on government data, there’s been a reduction of 24 percent on both commercial and backyard hogs, in terms of population,” Alba said during the signing ceremony on March 17, 2021. Under the MOU, UNAHCO will deliver a massive information and education campaign, bringing in more than 1,000 representatives to monitor swine raisers and their operations across the country. “They will roam around the country down to the barangay level to provide biosecurity measures to prevent the onset of spread of ASF and other swine disease,” Alba said. Alba said the ultimate goal of the government and the private sector is to bring back the lost capacity of the Philippine

He said the partnership would strive to contain ASF by implementing the DA’s twin program, Bantay ASF sa Barangay and Integrated National Swine Production Initiatives for Recovery and Expansion. BABay ASF is a multi-stakeholder partnership program between the public and private sector and veterinarians that aims to control the spread of ASF at the grassroots level through biosecurity, surveillance and monitoring as well as re-

stocking of swine farms affected by the disease. Meanwhile, INSPIRE aims to accelerate the repopulation and recovery of the hog industry to ensure availability, accessibility and affordability of pork and pork products. Under the partnership, UNAHCO will create a working group composed of industry partners and assign a focal person who will coordinate with the DA’s Bureau of Animal Industry, National Livestock Program and Regional Field Offices.

Bria ventures into condo projects via Astra Vertical

Astra Vertical Villages is a vibrant alternative to the drab and dreary residential tower blocks in the big cities. CONVENIENCE, practicality and style are factors that define condominium living, making it an attractive option for highly mobile young Filipino professionals

JAPANESE household company Earth Corp. announced breakthrough clinical studies confirming that Natucair, its brand of fabric and linen spray, kills more than 99.9 percent of the SARSCoV-2 virus that causes COVID-19. Shintaro Noda, in charge of regional marketing of Earth Corp., said that based on clinical studies made by the Japan Textile Products Quality and Technology Center in Kobe, Natucair was effective in killing over 99.9 percent SARS-CoV-2 in suspension. With 17 testing centers in Japan and around the world, the Japan Textile Products Quality and Technology Center is one of the most credible and trusted institutions when it comes to evaluating the efficacy of products to be used internationally. The testing involved mixing nine parts of Natucair with one part sample of the SARS-CoV-2 using plaque assay protocol. After five minutes of contact, the samples were re-examined to see the effect on the SARS-CoV-2 particles. “We are extremely proud of our team of scientists and researchers who have made this groundbreaking confirmation,” said Yuya Suzuki of research and development. “Every day, Filipinos should be able to have options and products that can help them stay safe from the dangers of COVID-19 and we’re happy to add Natucair to that list.”

who have a lot on their plates. For them, purchasing a condo unit is a clever step towards homeownership—a milestone in their life journey to check without having

to break the bank. An affordable price should also come packaged with all the great amenities that make up a comfortable condo lifestyle. Condo dwellers should enjoy the use of recreational amenities after a long day at work. They must have access to the essentials such as food, banks, service centers and pharmacies, an advantage at a time when health and safety protocols are still in place. With so much going for it, the condo lifestyle can now be accessed at an attractive and affordable price with Bria Homes introducing Astra Vertical Villages to the market. A leader in housing development in the Philippines, Bria Homes has adhered to the effective formula: affordability + quality = a beautiful Bria home for every Filipino. For Astra Vertical Villages, prospective homeowners can experience condominium living

for as low as P10,000 a month. Bearing starter-pack price tags, Astra Vertical Villages features affordability, accessibility and independence to reel in young, aspirational Filipinos who are on their way to fulfilling their career goals. It also offers amenities formerly unheard of in economical vertical spaces such as a communal clubhouse with function halls, swimming pools and spacious play areas and complete gym facilities. “Astra Vertical Villages is a vibrant alternative to the drab and dreary residential tower blocks we see in the big cities. Each tower makes up a sizable village, where unit owners enjoy cozy and intimate co-living in elegant walk-up buildings. Here, comfort comes with financial practicality as all our units are available at excellent budgetfriendly prices,” said Red Rosales, president of Bria Homes.

Homeownership remains a priority for Filipino consumers

AS tumultuous as the year 2020 was, it provided key insights into what must be prioritized to continue living comfortably and securely. Unexpected challenges make individuals and families appreciate the stability that having a roof over one’s head brings. It was in 2020 as well when Filipinos increasingly saw that property ownership can be a steadfast source of passive income even when facing an uncertain future. This is why Ohmyhome, a leading property solutions platform and an expert on real estate, believes that Filipinos— whether starting families, young professionals, or property investors—will still include homeownership in their priority list for 2021. Race and Rhonda Wong, co-founders of Ohmyhome, say this view is supported by data culled from the Ohmyhome application and website, which were launched in the Philippines in September 2020. “In December 2020,” they says, “house and lot properties in Cavite and in Novaliches, Quezon City, garnered significant levels of interest. These locations being north and south—and on the fringes—of Metro Manila is a pleasant contradiction.” Race and Rhonda are also anticipating a boost in real estate activity this year, noting that forecasts for Philippine real estate show a positive outlook for 2021, as upcoming business developments and national infrastructures are set for completion within the next two years.

COVID-19 pushed this architect to design a way to survive and succeed W

HEN the construction industry experienced a slowdown because of the pandemic, Sahara Isles, a licensed architect, was forced to choose between her job and her health.

Before COVID-19 landed on our shores, Isles received a small salary that was augmented by overtime pay in exchange for long hours. When the virus arrived, this was reduced further. Unfortunately, taking on more tasks in her job meant compromising her health as she discovered she has asthma which makes her more susceptible to the virulent disease. “I decided to stop working and wait for the situation to subside, but it didn’t,” she laments. “Monthly necessities ate up my savings and I only had very little left in my account, with no job.” Raised in a single-mom household, Isles knows first-hand about the innate strength and determination that women can lean on when pursuing a goal. In May, she started looking for freelance graphic design jobs, something she has been passionate about since childhood. With the help of an online design

and publishing platform, Isles was able to design her way, so to speak, to a better life amid the challenges brought by the pandemic. “I decided to specialize in designing on Canva and found projects through freelancing websites. I was surprised to get my first gig quickly and found that my skills were highly soughtafter,” she relates. For several months, she focused on various graphic design projects such as designing brand collaterals, book covers, flyers, and posters. “My most in demand service is creating social media visuals; most of my high-paying clients are agencies that manage social media. I also have patrons and repeat customers,” shares Isles. In fact, there was a time, she says, “when I got so many gigs that I had to

hire an assistant to help me with minor design jobs so I could meet deadlines. It was exhausting but fulfilling.” Her freelance work presented many advantages that even allowed her to earn more than her full-time job. “I can earn money from home, and it often takes no more than a couple hours of work to complete a project on Canva. From July to December 2020, I made more than my annual income when I was an employed architect!” More than just surviving, she was able to succeed and have a regular source of income until circumstances allowed her

to gradually go back to the field. With some restrictions being lifted, Isles has gone back to her day job, but designing still remains a very important part of her career. “I was commissioned for a project as lead architect to design a two-hectare subdivision in Candelaria, Quezon, but because designing has been so close to my heart, I still accept graphic design commissions on the side.” “Looking back, I now feel more empowered and encouraged to trust in myself, my skills, and my ability to adapt.”

A DESIGNER THROUGH AND THROUGH. When licensed architect Sahara Isles decided to stay home because of the pandemicinduced slowdown in her line of work, she decided to focus on freelance graphic design to earn a living.

Rizal’s ‘Noli Me Tangere’ as a suite of poems AWARD-winning poet Rodrigo Dela Peña, Jr. recently released Tangere, a collection a poems corresponding to each chapter in Noli Me Tangere. Published by the University of the Philippines Press, Tangere, in essence, is a poetic reinvention of Jose Rizal’s seminal novel. Part experiment, part palimpsest and collage, part interrogation and reclamation, the poetic sequence channels the imagined voices of Maria Clara, Pilosopo Tasyo, Sisa, and other minor characters of Rizal to create a resonant, kaleidoscopic chorus. Caroline Hau, professor of Southeast Asian literature at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies in Kyoto University, says, “Crystalline and compelling, the suite of poems that is Tangere issues an injunction to touch and respond—above all, to remain engaged—as readers inhabit anew Rizal’s world and multitude of characters and, in so doing, experience the Philippines more than a century hence as if it were a century ago.” Tangere is available on the UP Press website (press.up.edu.ph/ store) and on Shopee and Lazada. Sci-fi novel features Filipino immigrant THE life and adventures of Alunsinag “Al” Bayani, a 17-year-old Filipino immigrant in the US, is chronicled in the sci-fi novel 58 Minutes in Driftland written by I.S.A. Crisostomo-Lopez. Al lives with his mother Mercedes or “Chedeng” Bayani, a nurse who works at a community hospital in Los Angeles, while his father Artemio “Miyo” Bayani is a travel writer who is mostly out of town on assignment. He faces many adventures with his two best friends, Ming Julong, a Chinese immigrant from Hong Kong, and Tej Ondrej, an Indian immigrant from Bangalore. The adventure begins when Alunsinag accidentally steps into Driftland and discovers he can switch places with his alternate, more efficient self for 58 minutes. The switch opens doors to discovering one’s strengths and regaining confidence in one’s abilities. An interesting allegory on a person’s journey to self-realization and the battle between good and evil, 58 Minutes in Driftland is also a coming-of-age story that explores current issues young people are facing today, such as belongingness and discrimination, standing up to bullies, discovering one’s potential, and falling in love. Crisostomo-Lopez is a stay-at-home mother who has retired after 17 years of office work. She says that she composes story ideas in her mind while doing the laundry or mopping the floors. She is based in Biñan City, Laguna with her husband, four children, and two dogs. 58 Minutes in Driftland is available in both paperback and digital editions on Amazon.com.

Pets Choco and Whitey, rescued by Save ALL Inc. - Save Animals of Love and Light after the Taal Volcano erupted, are safe and happy with a Save ALL foster. Choco was already surrendered to Save ALL, while Save ALL has not heard from Whitey's owner despite a note left at the residence. Save ALL has spent thousands on the two dogs for removal of bladder stone for Whitey (P25,000.00), blood tests and treatment for erlichia and skin problems (P30,000.00). Choco will undergo removal of a growth in the chest area once funds are available. You can contact Save ALL in Facebook if you can help Choco.

As early as now, please purchase a cage big enough for your dog to move around inside if you can not allow your dog to roam inside your property. A tied or caged dog has a tendency to be more aggressive because they have not been allowed to release excess energy through walking or other activities. Never tie the dogs. In case of emergency, it will be difficult to untie the dogs so that they can run to safety. If the dog is tied, please, never leave them tied when you evacuate. Untie them and let them look for safety if you can not bring them. If the dog is in a cage, please make sure the lock is easy to open so that you can let the dog out in case of an emergency.

This dog and the dog in the other photo were rescued by Save ALL Inc. - Save Animals of Love and Light in January last year after Taal Volcano erupted. They were left behind by the owners who were forced to evacuate immediately. The rescuers had so much difficulty freeing them because of the chain and lock. Please do not tie your dog or leave them behind when emergency happens. If you can not bring them, at least let them out of cages or untie them before leaving. From ready.gov/pets, here are the things that should be in your plan: Have a list of safe places for your pet when you are all forced to evacuate. Stay Informed

You must always get updates on current conditions so you can decide and act based on information. Here are some ways you can stay informed: Pay attention to local alerts and warnings from public safety officials. Listen to local officials when you are told to evacuate or move to another safer place Always bring your pets inside the house at the first sign or warning of a storm or disaster.

Food allergy in pets YES, there are cats and dogs who can be allergic to some food. “Food allergies in pets can begin at any age. They can start even if your cat or dog has been eating the same food for months or years,” said Fetch of WebMD in “Could My Pet Be Allergic to Their Food?“

Symptoms

Fetch said a pet with food allergy will show some of the following symptoms: 1. Itchy skin: This is the common type of allergy in pets. It is also known as allergic dermatitis. “Irritated, itchy skin can happen anywhere on your pet’s body. In cats, it often happens on the head and neck. In dogs, it often happens near the ear, paws, rear end, and stomach, “ said Fetch. 2. Skin issues: Hives or urticarial may come out 6 to 24 hours after your dog has eaten the food he is allergic to. “If your dog has short hair, these itchy red bumps are easier to see. Otherwise, you may have to feel for them,” Fetch said. In cats, skin irritation may not be visible immediately. “Small lumps filled with fluid may develop over a few months, but they usually don’t pop up overnight,” said Fetch. There are two side effects due to itchy skin and hives: a. Your pet will likely scratch, bite, and lick the affected areas, which can lead to broken skin. If the skin is open, your pet might get an infection, which will need immediate treatment. b. The scratching can lead to hair loss. 3.Tummy trouble: Gastrointestinal issues, such as gas, vomiting, and diarrhea, may occur. 4.Swollen face: There may be swelling in your dog’s lips, eyelids, or ear flaps. 5. Chronic ear or paw infections: If the infection in your dog’s ear or paws happens repeatedly, this may be a sign of a food sensitivity, not
