In an interview on radio dzBB, a consultant of the National Task Force Against COVID-19 (NTF), Dr. Ted Herbosa, said the government may once again impose a modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) once hospitals become fully occupied. “Usually, we will go back to MECQ when hospitals and temporary treatment facilities are already fully occupied,” he said. “When hospitals are full, more people may die because they cannot treat them. They are waiting in line for admission.” On Saturday, the Quezon City General Hospital said that since March 9, the occupancy rate of the hospital's COVID-19 ward beds had exceeded 100 percent. An independent research group that has been monitoring the pandemic said on Sunday that the Philippines might record up to 8,000 daily new COVID-19 cases by the end of the month, and 18,000 to 20,000 by mid-April if the current reproduction rate does not change. The OCTA Research Team said in Metro Manila, daily virus cases could reach 5,000 to 6,000 by the end of March and 14,000 by mid-April. OCTA Research fellow Guido David said the projection is based on a 1.9 reproduction rate, which estimates the

By Willie Casas THE bulk of COVID-19 vaccines will arrive in the second quarter this year, National Task Force Against Covid-19 chief implementer Carlito Galvez Jr. said Sunday. Galvez, also the vaccine czar, said once the vaccines arrive, the government will be able to significantly scale up its immunization program to attain herd immunity against COVID-19. Amid criticism of the slow pace of the vaccination effort, Galvez said the limited supply of vaccines is a global problem. "The current production capacity of vaccine manufacturers simply has not been able to keep up with global demand," he said, adding that most of the COVID vaccines have been pre-ordered by developed countries. ‘Lawyers should be given arms to protect selves’ By Rey E. Requejo and Rio N. Araja JUSTICE Secretary Menardo Guevarra on Sunday said the government may help lawyers in expediting the issuance of license to possess and permit to carry firearm should they decide to arm themselves for protection amid an alarming number of killings involving members of their profession. "Lawyers know that their job exposes them to danger, and there is no law prohibiting them from arming themselves," Guevarra said, in an interview on radio dzBB. “If they wish to arm themselves, there's no problem with that. The government may even help facilitate the issuance of appropriate permits,”

Task force quizzes cops on use of lethal force By Rey E. Requejo JUSTICE Secretary Menardo Guevarra said Sunday that the task force formed to investigate extrajudicial killings will determine why law enforcers used lethal force when they served search warrants for loose firearms and explosives, killing nine activists in the process on March 7. He said the task force, created by Administrative Order 35, would find out if violence was necessary when

members of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) served search warrants in joint operations in several areas in Calabarzon. “While it is true what they say that their operations were legal because they had search warrants, the questions are first, is it true what the law enforcers said that these groups served as fronts and they are actually members of violent groups, the New People’s Army,” Guevarra said, in a radio interview over

radio dzBB. “Secondly, if it was necessary that there would be violence in the serving of the warrants,” he said, casting doubt on police claims that the suspects fought back. Under the 2012 Administrative Order No. 35, the inter-agency committee is mandated to investigate EJKs, enforced disappearances, torture and other violations of the right to life, liberty, and security of persons.
