Cops to stop display of affection in public Recto blasts move as ‘war on love, not on COVID’ By Macon Ramos-Araneta and Willie Casas

OLICE will now call out people holding hands, embracing, or kissing in public to help curb the continued rise of COVID-19. In an interview in Camp Crame Wednesday, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Debold Sinas said they would call out people who engaged in public displays of affection (PDA) because national and local authorities were alarmed at the spike in COVID-19 cases. “We cannot afford to lower our guard against the virus, especially at this point when the cure is already within reach,” he said—referring to vaccines that have begun to arrive. The PNP directive covers everyone, not just couples, PNP spokesman Brig. Gen. Ildebrandi Usana said. The restriction is part of granular, localized moves that hope to stem the socalled spike in coronavirus cases without the government ordering a stricter lockdown such as an enhanced community quarantine (ECQ), which led to a steep dive for the economy. Although most of the country is under a modified general community quarantine (MGCQ), measures implemented during the ECQ, such as longer Next page

The attack left the main portal to the government’s website disabled for at least six hours, as the Gov.ph home

page was “down” until around 11 p.m. This developed as the group Human Rights Watch (HRW) on Wednesday said the police operations in Calabarzon that led to the arrests and deaths of activists showed the need for member countries of the United Nations to probe the “worsening” human rights situation in the Philippines.

HRW said the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights should consider having a “rapid response unit” probe of the police operations. Also, the European Union on Wednesday welcomed the government’s announcement that it will investigate the deaths of the nine individuals on so-called “Bloody Sunday.”

In a statement, the EU delegation in the country also recalled the country’s commitment before the UN Human Rights Council “to ensure accountability for human rights violations and abuses.” “Reports on the use of excessive force against unarmed individuals and Next page
