Touchdown: NASA’s Perseverance rover lands on Martian soil
Patients cleared of Cebu variant with mild signs
AFTER seven months in space, NASA’s Perseverance rover overcame a tense landing phase with a series of perfectly executed maneuvers to gently float down to the Martian soil Thursday and embark on its mission to search for signs of past life. “Touchdown confirmed,” said operations lead Swati Mohan at 3:55 pm Eastern Time (2055 GMT), as mission control at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena erupted in cheers. ALL of the COVID-19 cases in Central Visayas that showed two mutations of the virus exhibited only mild symptoms and have been discharged from quarantine, health officials said yesterday. “All the cases in Central Visayas with the 2 mutations of concern – E484K as well as the N501Y – exhibited only mild symptoms and have been cleared from their quarantine,” said Philippine Genome Center executive director Dr. Cynthia Saloma. Department of Health Central Visayas regional director Dr. Jaime Bernadas said they would heighten the case surveillance in the areas where the mutations were detected. The N501Y mutation is also found in the UK coronavirus variant, which has been associated by experts with higher transmissibility.

Workers’ wage subsidy lacks funds—DOLE By Maricel V. Cruz THE Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) has asked for more funds for wage subsidies this year for workers who lost their jobs or suffered a loss in income as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. In an online press briefing, Labor Assistant Secretary Dominique Tutay said the 2021 national budget does not provide for such a wage subsidy, which will run for about three months. In the same press briefing, Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez said that 1.6 million Filipinos have yet to return to jobs that they held before the pandemic. Tutay said they based the budget of the subsidy program on the average wage of workers in different sectors. The amount, he said, would be between P7,000 and P11,000 a month for Next page

Vaccine czar makes a plea: Weak ‘Auring’ still a threat to Caraga Have patience By Rio N. Araja
WEATHER disturbance “Auring” weakened into a tropical storm and began moving westward on Friday at 2 p.m. It is forecast to make landfall over the eastern coast of Caraga region on Sunday morning, with possible re-intensification into a severe tropical storm likely prior to landfall.
