Children 10-14 must stay indoors, Rody rules PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte on Monday revoked the Inter-Agency Task Force's decision last week to allow children aged 10 to 14 years old to leave their homes in areas under modified general community quarantine (MGCQ) in a bid to stimulate the economy. Duterte said this was due to the United Kingdom variant of the coronavirus that had been detected in several patients in the country. “Balik ho kayo sa bahay muna… Pasensya na po kayo. Mine is just a precaution. Takot lang ako kasi itong bagong strain strikes the young chil-
dren,” the President said in his weekly national address. “Napilitan akong i-reimpose ‘yung [restrictions on] 10 to 14. Not at this time. It’s a sacrifice for the parents and for the children,” Duterte said. Presidential spokesman Harry Roque had announced last week that minors aged 10 to 14 in MGCQ areas would be allowed to go out starting February 1. Previously, only those 15 to 65 years old were allowed to leave their homes amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Scientists in the United Kingdom earlier said the new coronavirus variant
initially discovered there may be more capable of infecting children. The new variant is largely believed to be more transmissible, with experts still confirming whether it can make COVID-19 deadlier. The Philippines has so far recorded 17 COVID-19 cases with the UK variant, 12 of whom are in Bontoc, Mountain Province. Meanwhile, the Department of Health said it would not recommend the extension of the mandatory quarantine period for travelers to 21 days Next page

THE Palace on Monday urged the military to exercise prudence in issuing statements after it inaccurately named several prominent University of the Philippines (UP) alumni as members of the New People's Army. Presidential spokesman Harry Roque suggested that if the military were more careful, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana would not need to apologize. “Defense Secretary Lorenzana has apologized for mistakes. Let’s leave it at
that. But there is no overall communication plan on red-tagging. We leave that to the defense establishment,” Roque said in a press briefing. The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Civil-Military Operations Office apologized for the list posted on its Facebook page and said it would conduct an internal investigation to find out how it was published. “We sincerely apologize for those who were inadvertently affected by inconsistencies regarding the List of Students who joined the NPA (Died or Captured) that was posted in the AFP Information Exchange Facebook account,” the AFP

PH twits China on use of force in disputed sea By Rey E. Requejo PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte's spokesman Harry Roque said Monday the use of force under international law was "generally prohibited," after China authorized its Coast Guard to fire on foreign vessels on Chineseclaimed reefs in the event of threats – seen as a move that could escalate tension in contested waters. Roque's statement, during an online briefing for reporters, coincided with the call by former Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario on the Duterte administration to give priority to building up a credible defense posture for the country after China passed a law authorizing its coast guard to fire on foreign vessels Del Rosario, chairman of Stratbase ADR Institute, also said government should now seriously consider
