AT LEAST 37 DIE AS 6.2 EARTHQUAKE HITS INDONESIAN ISLAND A POWERFUL earthquake rocked Indonesia’s Sulawesi island early Friday, killing at least 37 people, levelling a hospital and severely damaging other buildings, authorities said. Hundreds more were injured when the
6.2-magnitude quake struck in the early hours, triggering panic among the terrified residents of the island, which was hit by a huge quake and tsunami two and a half years ago that killed thousands. “The latest information we have is
that 26 people are dead... in Mamuju city,” said Ali Rahman, head of the local disaster mitigation agency, adding “that number could grow.” “Many of the dead are buried under rubble,” he said.
Separately, the national disaster agency said at least eight people had died in an area south of Mamuju, a city of some 110,000 in West Sulawesi province, bringing the total death toll to 34. Rescuers were searching for more
than a dozen patients and staff trapped beneath the rubble of the levelled Mamuju hospital. “The hospital is flattened – it collapsed,” said Arianto from the rescue Next page

MID mounting criticism of the decision to buy the Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine, vaccine czar Carlito Galvez Jr. said the procurement of 25 million of doses of the Chinese product was not yet a done deal. Appearing before the second hearing of the Senate Committee of the Whole, Galvez said the agreement was still subject to the final approval by the country’s vaccine expert panel. Senators have questioned the decision to buy Sinovac when a recent study in Brazil showed an efficacy of only 50.4 percent, much lower than other vaccines in the market. Under questioning from Senator Nancy Binay Friday, Galvez replied
“no” when he was asked if the Sinovac purchase was a done deal. But Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Huang Xilian in a Facebook post on Friday said the shipment of Sinovac vaccines may arrive “as early as next month.” “We are now expecting China Sinovac vaccine [to] arrive in the Philippines as early as next month. Vaccine exec vows transparency on test results By Joyce Pangco Pañares
A SENIOR executive of Sinovac, one of the makers of China’s leading vaccine candidates, said the firm would be transparent on the results of its clinical tests as it assured the Philippines it would provide “affordable” vaccines. “We will be happy to share the results
of our clinical trials when they become available,” said Sinovac Biotech senior director of global strategy and business development Helen Yang in an interview with ANC cable news channel. Yang downplayed concerns over new data from Brazil showing the Chinese vaccine had an efficacy rate of only 50.4 percent.
“(The) trials in Brazil (were) conducted among health workers who are more exposed to the virus,” she said. “Trials are not ‘apples to apples’ because of difference in protocols, targeted populations...Over a million doses of the Sinovac vaccine already administered in China.
