By Macon Ramos-Araneta CABINET officials assured President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday they are ready to roll out vaccines for the coronavirus to the countryside once they arrive in the country starting next month. Vaccine czar Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. and Health Secretary Francisco Duque III told the President they would tap the country’s “bayanihan spirit” in tandem with businesses and local governments to help move the jab against the deadly disease. Galvez, a former military general, also said the National Task Force on COVID-19 would use the logistics of the Armed Forces of the Philippines to bring the vaccine to the far-flung areas of the country’s 7,000-plus islands. President Rodrigo Duterte said frontliners and vulnerable sectors will get the first shot of the vaccine when they reach the country, and that he will be among the last. “Priority is uniformed personnel, mga sundalo natin, kasama sa priority, mauna talaga yung pobre, yung wala talaga. Kung milyon ‘yan (vaccine), magsabaysabay na kayo, huli na kami,” he said.

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte once again read a list of government officials dismissed by the Ombudsman for corruption and other charges in his televised address on Wednesday night. The list included Alejandro Rivera, regional vice president of the Quedan and Rural Credit Guarantee Corporation. Duterte said the nature of his case was conduct prejudicial to the best interest of the service, dishonesty, and grave misconduct. “Lahat sila ito pare-pareho ‘yan, dismissed from service with accessory penalties of cancellation of eligibility, forfeiture of retirement benefits, and the perpetual disqualification for reemployment in the government service. Ibig sabihin he can no longer seek employment sa gobyerno,” the President said. He also read a list of Armed Forces personnel discharged from service, led by Quartermaster 1st Class Petty Officer Elpidio Aromin of the Philippine Navy, dismissed for fraud against the government.
