BRITAIN BARES NEW, 'MORE INFECTIOUS' COVID STRAIN; UK FLIGHTS BANNED THE British government has imposed a strict Christmas lockdown in southeastern England because a new strain of the coronavirus was “out of control.” "We acted very quickly and decisively," British Health Secretary Matt Han-
cock told Sky News. "Unfortunately the new strain was out of control. We have got to get it under control." News of the new strain led Belgium and the Netherlands to suspend flight arrivals from Britain from
midnight Sunday. Germany was also considering banning flights from Britain and South Africa, sources close to the German health ministry said. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson
on Saturday announced a "stay at home" order for London and southeast England to slow a new coronavirus strain that is significantly more infectious. Early data suggests the new strain could be "up to 70 percent more trans-

US lawmakers agree on $900-b relief package US LAWMAKERS agreed on pandemic spending powers for the Federal Reserve late Saturday, the Wall Street Journal reported, clearing the way for a vote on a roughly $900 billion COVID-19 relief package for millions of Americans. The deal would maintain the central bank's ability to set up emergency lending programs without congressional approval, the Journal said, but the Fed would require approval to restart similar existing programs once they expire later this year. Republicans had sought to limit the Fed's ability to provide credit for businesses and other institutions, while Democrats argued restricting its powers could compound the fiscal crisis in the world's largest economy. The impasse had threatened to temporarily shut down the government, which would be disastrous given the worsening economy and record daily death tolls from COVID-19.
