Pemberton was halfway through his maximum 10-year prison term for the 2014 murder when Duterte this unexpectedly ordered his release, drawing condemnation from rights groups. Escorted by US military personnel, the 25-year-old left on board a US military plane at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport at 9:14 a.m., the Bureau of Immigration said.
"Pemberton wishes to express his deepest gratitude to President Duterte for granting him an absolute pardon. He is extremely grateful for this act of compassion," his lawyer Rowena Flores said in a statement. Flores said Pemberton extends his "sincere sympathy for the pain he caused" to the family of his victim Jennifer Laude, the first formal apolNext page ogy from the marine.

PGH doc sees woes in revised social distance Recoveries surge; doubts linger THE government's easing of physical distancing in public transportation amid the COVID-19 pandemic is "problematic," an expert said Sunday. The use of face masks and face shields will mitigate virus transmission, but "close contact definition remains," said Edsel Salvaña, an infectious disease doctor at the Philippine General Hospital. "The proposal to decrease the distance in public transport to less than one meter
is problematic. If there is a single COVID-19-positive person in the transport, anyone less than one meter from him/her after 15 minutes becomes a close contact who will need to quarantine and can potentially spread the disease.” The Transport department earlier said it would push through on Monday the easing of physical distancing in public vehicles to 0.75 meter from 1 meter, following the approval of the Inter Agency
Task Force on COVID-19. Transport Undersecretary Artemio Tuazon Jr. said the agency moved to reduce physical distancing in transport to accommodate more passengers, especially in the modern jeepneys and buses. But a leader of a transport alliance on Sunday advised the government to allow all public transportation modes to operate first to accommodate all commuters Next page
Impeach-Leonen an option, lawyer urges SolGen By Rio N. Araja A LAWYER said Sunday the initiation of an impeachment complaint against Supreme Court Associate Justice Marvic Leonen was still an option over Leonen’s failure to file his Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth over the years. Lorenzo Gadon said that would be appropriate if Solicitor General Jose Calida would act favorably on his letter-request urging him to file a quo warranto petition for Leonen’s removal. “Impeachment will be an option,” Gadon said. “I will assess that move upon receipt of the certified copies of the SALNs as it may be more practical and appropriate for the Solicitor General to file a quo warranto petition.” Gadon, citing as precedent the case of former Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno, said he was hoping that the high court would act on the matter on Tuesday to make public Leonen’s SALNs. The Code of Conduct and Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees mandates government officials Next page
