AWMAKERS on Sunday backed the proposal of Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. to terminate projects of Chinese firms involved in West Philippine Sea reclamation projects, following the lead of the United States.

In separate statements, Samar 1st District Rep. Edgar Sarmiento and Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Carlos Isagani Zarate expressed support for Locsin's recommendation, which mirrors the US imposition of sanctions and restrictions last week on 24 state-owned Chinese companies for taking part in building artificial islands in the disputed waters. This developed as two retired Supreme Court justices and a former Foreign Affairs secretary urged the government to ask the United Nations General Assembly to enforce the 2016 ruling of a UN tribunal that favors the Philippines in its territorial dispute with China in the West Philippine Sea. Retired Supreme Court associate justices Antonio Carpio and Conchita Carpio-Morales and Locsin's predecessor, former Ambassador Albert del Rosario, said this was the most opportune time for the Duterte administration to bring the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) ruling on the South China Sea before the 75th regular session of the UN General Next page

Drop Sabah? Don't even dream of it—DFA By Rey E. Requejo

BOMBING BRAINS? Abu Sayyaf

FOREIGN Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. on Sunday said there have been “repeated offers” to abandon the Philippine claim to Sabah but told watchers of the territorial dispute with Malaysia "don't even dream of it." On his Twitter account, Locsin claimed the offers "as a matter of history" came “from aspiring

presidential candidates since the late 1970s, usually opposition because they are most in need of campaign funds, but administration as well." But the country's top diplomat said the Department of Foreign Affairs will not accept advice outside the department on the matter. “When one is given an assignment one does not solicit nor accept advice from outside the department, no matter

who, especially we don't want the help of journalists. Spread the world. What we do in DFA is done in DFA and stays in DFA. It's a bit like Las Vegas. Got it?" he said in a tweet. Malacañang remained silent on the issue on Sunday, even as Malaysian Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin wholly rejected Manila's claim on the North Borneo state. Next page

SAN Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora said Metro Manila should remain under a general community quarantine (GCQ) as this would enable the government to balance the economy and health concerns during the COVID-19 pandemic. Zamora said he made this recommendation to the Metro Manila Council, which groups mayors of 17 cities and one municipality in the National Capital Region. “The businesses that have been allowed to open under a GCQ have been able to operate well,” Zamora said in Filipino. “We shouldn't rush the easing Next page of quarantine restrictions.”

Global cases top 25m, surge in India Speaker promises NEW DELHI―Global coronavirus infections soared past 25 million on Sunday, as countries around the world further tightened restrictions to try to stop the rampaging pandemic. A million additional cases have been detected globally roughly every four days since mid-July, according to an AFP tally, with India on Sunday setting the record for the highest single-day rise in cases with 78,761. The surge in India, home to 1.3 billion people, came as the government further

eased lockdown restrictions on the weekend to help ease pressure on the reeling economy. Even nations such as New Zealand and South Korea, which had previously brought their outbreaks largely under control, are now battling new clusters of infections. On the other side of the world, Latin America—the worst-hit region—was still struggling with its first wave, with Covid-19 deaths in Brazil crossing 120,000, second only to the United States.
