By Macon Ramos-Araneta and Willie Casas

ENATE President Vicente Sotto III called for an investigation Monday into the death of highprofile inmates and their immediate cremation at the New Bilibid Prison, saying officials there could have replaced their bodies and declared them dead from COVID-19.
“How would we know? There were no more fingerprints,” Sotto said. Sotto's call for a Senate investigation came as the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said 19 inmates at the NBP have died from COVID-19. In his resolution, Sotto noted that a ranking police official, who was aware of the supposed COVID-19 deaths, said prison officials “could have just replaced the body with another inmate and declared the death of a high-profile inmate.” Next page

Cruz MALACAÑANG on Monday said that Charter change or “cha-cha” is not a priority as the country is grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic, but a House panel said it would convene after Congress opens on July 27 to tackle two proposals for constitutional amendments. Palace spokesman Harry Roque made the remarks in his regular press briefing after a number of mayors called for amendments to the Constitution. “Cha-cha was never mentioned as a government priority during President Duterte’s speeches. You know, every week the President talks to the people and Charter change was never mentioned as a government priority,” Roque said. The League of Municipalities of the Philippines is pushing to amend the Constitution to increase local governments’ internal revenue allotment (IRA) and lift restrictions on foreign investments in unspecified industries.
