Surging virus cases raise PH tally to 67, 456 By Willie Casas THE country's tally of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases topped 67,000 on Sunday after the Department of Health (DOH) announced 2,241 more infections, bringing the total to 67,456. The day's total was based on tests done by 74 of the 84 operational labs, the DOH said. The five provinces with the highest number of new cases were Metro Manila
with 1,625, Laguna with 115, Cavite with 76, Rizal with 75, and Cebu with 55. DOH reported 398 new recoveries, bringing the total number of patients who recovered from COVID-19 to 22,465. The death toll climbed to 1,831 with 58 new fatalities—25 of which were in July and 33 of which were in June. Deaths were from Region 7 (54 or 93 percent), NCR (one or 2 percent), Region 1 (one or 2 percent), Region 9 (one or 2 percent), and Region 11 (one or 2 percent).
Eighty-nine duplicates were removed from the total case count. There are also 43,160 active cases undergoing treatment or quarantine, 90.1 percent of which have mild symptoms, 9.1 percent are asymptomatic, 0.4 percent are severe, and 0.4 percent are in critical condition. THE new coronavirus pandemic has claimed more than 600,000 lives worldwide, an AFP tally showed Sunday. A total of 600,523 deaths were recorded globally out of 14,233,355 cases, a count based on official data showed, including 205,065 deaths in Europe—the worst-affected continent. The virus is spreading rapidly in Latin America—the region with the secondmost recorded deaths—where 160,726 people have died. The United States is the country with the most deaths with 140,103, followed by Brazil (78,772), Britain (45,273), Mexico (38,888) and Italy (35,042). Requejo SOME 44 cause-oriented and advocacy groups on Sunday filed the 10th petition before the Supreme Court seeking to declare the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020 as unconstitutional. The petitioners, most of which said they had been subjected to red-tagging by the government, sought to strike down the controversial law, a day after it took effect on Saturday, July 18, even
without its implementing rules and regulations. Represented by the National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers, the petitioners urged the justices to immediately issued a temporary restraining order to enjoin the convening of the Anti-Terror Council (ATC) and the exercise of its functions.
