Anti-HIV drugs didn't work in virus casesâDOH Sudden spike
By Willie Casas THE Department of Health (DOH) will stop administering the anti-HIV drugs lopinavir and ritonavir to hospitalized COVID-19 patients after the World Health Organization (WHO) said it would discontinue its trials with them, along with the anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine after they failed to reduce mortality rate.
âBased on the recent evidence and recommendations from our experts,we will be stopping the use of lopinavir and ritonavir among hospitalized patients,â Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire told reporters Sunday. âWe have already discontinued hydroxychloroquine early on when the evidence for this came out,â she added. Patients who are already on the
treatment would have the option to stop, she said. âWe will have remdesivir plus interferon as the new regimen versus remdesivir alone versus interferon alone and standard of care once shipment of interferon arrives,â she said. Even Europe, which has largely been celebrating reopening, saw some setbacks, with authorities placing 200,000 people back under lockdown in Spain after a spike in infections that underlined how easily hard-won progress can be reversed. The DOH also reported seven new fatalities, bringing the death toll to 1,297. There were 489 new recoveries reported, bringing the total to 11,942. Expert says rise in cases 'normal' An epidemiologist on Sunday said that the steady increase in the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country is expected due to easing up of community quarantine measures. Dr. Rontgene Solante, the head of San Lazaro Hospital's Adult Infectious Diseases and Tropical Medine Section, said hospitals should have the capacity to attend to COVID-19 patients especially the critical cases in case of a surge of infections. Solante added that there are more mild COVID-19 cases than severe ones now in the country.
