ABS-CBN needs a law to extend its franchise—Palace By MJ Blancaflor, Macon Ramos-Araneta, Rey E. Requejo and Willie Casas THE Palace on Wednesday said lawmakers should pass a law extending the validity of ABS-CBN’s franchise, which expires on March 30, if they are really inclined to renew it. Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said this would enable the broadcast giant to continue operating until its new franchise is granted. Earlier, Rep. Antonio Albano, vice chaiman of the House committee on legislative franchises, said that in practice, ABS-CBN may be allowed to operate while Congress debates bills to extend its franchise. But Panelo said a simpler way was to simply pass a new law to extend its Next page validity.

COVID-19 deaths exceed 2,000; virus hits 74,000 in 25 nations THE death toll from the new coronavirus outbreak surged to 2,000 on Wednesday, as Chinese and international health officials warned against excessive measures to contain the epidemic. More than 74,000 people have now been infected by the virus in China, with hundreds more cases in some 25 countries. The situation remains serious at the epicenter, with the director of a hospital in the central city of Wuhan becoming the seventh medical worker to succumb to the COVID-19 illness. But Chinese officials released a study showing most patients have mild cases of

the infection, and World Health Organization officials said the mortality rate was relatively low. The outbreak is threatening to put a dent in the global economy, with China paralyzed by vast quarantine measures and major firms such as iPhone maker Apple and mining giant BHP warning it could damage bottom lines. Health Secretary Francisco Duque III, however, said some 100 of the 531 Filipino crew members on the ship, which has been quarantined and docked at Yokohama, Japan since Feb. 4, have declined repatriation, saying they fear they would lose their jobs. “More than 100 Filipinos want to stay; they refused to be repatriated. We will respect their decision,” Duque said. The ship has the highest concentration of COVID-19 infections outside of China. On his Twitter account, Locsin said he ordered the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo to immediately work for the return of the Filipinos onboard the cruise ship. “It’s our duty to take care our overseas Filipinos wherever they are. TWO men gunned down the chief legal officer of the Bureau of Corrections while he was about to pick up his daughter from school Wednesday afternoon in Muntinlupa City, police said. Personnel of the Muntinlupa City Rescue Team rushed Fredrick Anthony Santos to a hospital but he was pronounced dead on arrival due to gunshot wounds in the head. Malacañang condemned Santos’ murder but said the ambush will not stop the government’s probe on the implementation of the Good Conduct Time Allowance.

Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said the incident was unlikely to affect the ongoing investigation, claiming other officials would come out to expose the irregularities at the national penitentiary. We don’t know exactly whether or not this might be a retaliation from some personal wrongdoing he has committed,’’ he told reporters.
