PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte asked for Filipinos’ trust in government and cooperation in containing the spread of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) following the sharp rise in confirmed cases worldwide. “I call on our people to remain calm, vigilant and responsible and I also ask your trust and cooperation, support as we face the challenge. Let’s unite as one nation, this challenge can be overcome,” President Duterte said in a recorded message aired on state-run RTVM on Thursday morning. Duterte said the government, together with the World Health Organization, medical societies, and partners in the private sector are addressing the problem and preparing for any eventuality. He also assured Filipinos staying in China that the government is prepared to repatriate them anytime they wanted to return home. “To our kababayans who remain in lockdown areas in China, I assure you that the government is ready to bring you home if you want. We won’t leave you behind,” Duterte said in a mix of English and Filipino. Next page
China death toll spikes to 1,355 CHINA’S official death toll and infection numbers from a new coronavirus spiked dramatically on Thursday after authorities changed their counting methods, fueling concern the epidemic is far worse than being reported. Two top-ranking politicians overseeing the epicenter of the outbreak were also sacked, adding to questions over China’s handling of the crisis, just hours after President Xi Jinping claimed “positive results” in battling the outbreak. The World Health Organization also quickly countered Chinese reassurances that the epidemic, which has now officially killed more than 1,350 people in China, would peak in a matter of weeks. “I think it’s way too early to try to predict the beginning, the middle or the end of this epidemic right now,” said Michael Ryan, head of WHO’s health emergencies program. The 1998 VFA created a legal framework for the presence of US troops in the Philippines and for organizing joint military exercises. Manila announced its decision Tuesday—a move the US Embassy in the Philippines called a “serious step”— touching off a six-month countdown to the end of the deal. “If they would like to do that, that’s fine, we’ll save a lot of money,” Trump told reporters at the White House, touting his “very good relationship” with President Rodrigo Duterte. PRESIDENTIAL Spokesman Salvador Panelo said Thursday the Philippines was also open to impose a travel ban to other countries with confirmed cases of COVID-19. He also insisted that the travel ban on Taiwan was a “health” issue and not a political one after authorities received reports that Ta i p e i would

Meanwhile, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III on Thursday appealed to lift the travel ban on the Filipino workers in Taiwan, saying the expanded travel ban might have detrimental effects on them.
