Facing ‘grave’ threat, China expands travel restrictions CHINA on Sunday expanded drastic travel restrictions to contain a viral contagion that has killed 56 people and infected nearly 2,000, as the United States and France prepared to evacuate their citizens from a quarantined city at the outbreak’s epicenter. A FILIPINO domestic worker in Hong Kong was quarantined after being exposed to two guests of her employer who tested positive for the new coronavirus. The Filipina, according to the consulate, is healthy and shows no sign of infection. China has locked down the hardhit province of Hubei in the country’s centre in an unprecedented operation affecting tens of millions of people to slow the spread of a respiratory illness that President Xi Jinping said posed a “grave” threat. Outside the epicenter, three cities, including Beijing, and an eastern province announced bans on long-distance buses from entering or leaving their borders. Originating in Hubei’s capital of Wuhan, the virus has spread throughout China and around the world, with cases

Palace belittles warning on Rody scandals MALACAÑANG on Sunday brushed aside a feng shui expert’s warning to President Rodrigo Duterte to be extra careful to avoid possible scandals this year. For Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo, the Chief Executive facing controversies was nothing new. “First and foremost, if I were to ask, then I wouldn’t believe in feng shui. But we have different beliefs,” Panelo said in an
Warning signs like earthquakes have been steadily waning since Taal burst to life two weeks ago with plumes of ash and lava, forcing over 135,000 people into shelters over fears a massive blast was coming. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said steadily shrinking ash and gas emissions were signs of “decreased tendency towards hazardous explosive eruption,” leading them to drop the alert by a notch, to Alert Level 3. The immediate impact of the reduced warning was the lifting of the evacuation order for nearly all the towns that ring the volcano, a tourist attraction that sits in the middle of a lake. “Residents of all towns under lockdown except Agoncillo and Laurel now have the option to return,” Batangas Gov. Hermilando Mandanas told a press conference. “There’s a possibility that the volcano may still erupt and we should still be ready to evacuate in one hour.” No one is known to have died in the eruption, but the ash it unleashed forced the brief closure of the capital’s main international airport, stranding tens of thousands of travelers. The volcano shot ash 15 kilometers high and spewed lava in the Jan. 12 eruption, which crushed scores of homes and killed livestock as well as crops. Next page
interview with dzIQ. “Second, what would the new scandals be? He has been facing scandals. Despite this, his rating continues to go up.” Joey Yap, feng shui and Chinese astrology consultant, said the President would likely use his “problem-solving skills to his advantage,” particularly in boosting the Philippine economy during the Year of the Metal Rat. THE Palace on Sunday played down the importance of the country’s Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) with the United States, saying the military pact was not beneficial to the country, and that its termination would not affect existing treaties with Washington. Presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo said the VFA merely grants privileges to American troops and provide them “legal cover” to enter the Philippines for joint training exercises with Filipino troops. “The VFA is more on the privileges granted to the American military...More on them than to us,” Panelo said in a radio interview. Panelo noted that the military pact, ratified in 1999, allows the US government to retain jurisdiction over their military personnel accused of committing crimes in the country, unless the crimes are “of particular importance to the Philippines. ‘New projects to combat poverty’ By MJ Blancaflor
President Rodrigo Duterte
MALACAÑANG on Sunday brushed off the recent survey that recorded the highest self-related poverty rate in five years and said that over 13.1 million families or 54 percent of the respondents considered themselves poor as of December 2019.
Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said it was normal for figures to “fluctuate” as he assured the public that the country’s economic managers would ensure more people would be lifted out of poverty. “There were times that it would fluctuate depending on the sentiments of Next page
