RESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte has declared that the Philippines would side with its long-time ally the United States if Filipinos were harmed by Iranians, as tensions mount in the Middle East after a US drone attack killed the top Iranian general.

“We will not be neutral. The President was very specific in saying last night that if the Filipinos are harmed, he will side with the Americans,” Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said in a Palace briefing. “If they will harm the Filipinos, then the President will not sit down idly and watch,” he added, quoting the President during Monday night’s Cabinet meeting. But Duterte on Tuesday ruled out sending Philippine troops to join the Americans.

Letter on US pullout from Iraq a ‘mistake’ AMERICA’S military strategy in Iraq was thrown into confusion Monday as the Pentagon admitted a letter from a general informing the Iraqi government of an imminent US troop pullout was sent by “mistake.” The latest developments came as a sea of black-clad mourners in Tehran paid homage to Qasem Soleimani, the head of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards’ Quds Force who was killed in a US strike in Iraq on Friday. US Brigadier General William Seely informed his Iraqi counterparts in a letter dated Sunday that American troops were preparing to leave Iraq. “We respect your sovereign decision to order our departure,” said the letter, whose authenticity was confirmed to AFP by both Iraqi and US defense officials. Seely said the US-led coalition would “be repositioning forces.” “In order to conduct this task, Coalition Forces are required to take certain measures to ensure that the movement out of Iraq is conducted in a safe and efficient manner,” said the letter. It said helicopters would be traveling in and around Baghdad’s Green Zone where the US Embassy is located as part of the preparations. AFP could hear helicopters flying low over Baghdad Next page

Immigration men on their toes after Kuwait deployment ban By Vito Barcelo

THE Bureau of Immigration said it will not allow Kuwait-bound workers to leave after the government declared a ban on the deployment of newly-hired domestic workers in the Gulf state. BI port operations division chief

Grifton Medina said immigration officers in the different international ports have been instructed to strictly enforce the ban imposed by the Department of Labor and Employment. Medina said the ban applies to all newly-hired household service workers recruited for deployment to Kuwait.

He said that departing Kuwaiti-bound domestic workers whose overseas employment certificates were issued before the cut-off date of Jan. 3, 2020 as set by DOLE are still valid for deployment and thus will be allowed to leave. The bureau carried out the ban after it received a copy of a Jan. 3 resolution

6-m devotees seen flocking to Traslacion

By MJ Blancaflor PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte’s top security adviser has rejected the revival of the talks with the Communist Party of the Philippines, saying the government should pursue localized peace talks instead. This came after CPP founding chairman Jose Maria Sison said the Duterte administration should start releasing political prisoners as a goodwill measure to resume the talks this month, adding their freedom will “ensure [the] success” of the meeting. In a statement, Hermogenes Esperon Jr. said the peace negotiations were only being used by the communist rebels as a “period to rest when badly beaten, seek reinforcements, and initiate recruitment.” “We have alternatives to the peace talks. We are now pursuing local peace engagements which have resulted in understanding and the mainstreaming of rebels,” Esperon said in a statement.
