ONSUMERS can expect to pay more for their cooking gas and face even more price shocks as new excise taxes on oil products kick in starting this month.

• TRAIN law to fuel third tranche of increases with diesel fetching P1.50 per liter.

Cooking gas prices are expected to rise to by as much as P83.05 per 11-kilogram tank to reflect the higher price of liquefied petroleum gas in the world market. Oil companies raised the price of LPG by P6.74 to P7.55 per kilo and auto LPG by P4.25 per liter effective Jan. 1. Petron Corp. and Phoenix Petroleum Philippines raised the price of LPG by P7.55 per kilo while rival Isla LPG raised its price by P6.74 per kilo. Before the increase, LPG sold for P607 to P695 per 11-kilo tank with prices varying depending on the brand, location of the station and market forces. On Tuesday, the oil firms also raised the price of gasoline by P0.85 per liter, diesel by P0.50 per liter and P0.35 per liter for kerosene to reflect the movement of oil prices in the global market. Year-to-date adjustments stand at a net increase of P7.31 per liter for gasoline, Next page

Health chief pushes fireworks ban amid ‘record low’ casualty By Macon Ramos-Araneta WHILE the number of fireworks-related injuries dropped 35 percent in 2019, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III batted for a total ban to bring the number of casualties down to zero. In a news conference at the East Avenue Medical Center, Duque said more injuries this year were caused by legal fireworks than illegal ones. He said there is always the risk of an accident with firecrackers, whether they are legal or illegal.

The way to achieve zero casualties, he said, is to ban fireworks altogether as some other countries have done. Data from the Health department’s Epidemiology Bureau showed the top five causes of fireworks-related injuries were kwitis, 33; luces, 19; fountain, 18; piccolo, 13 and baby rocket, 9. Among the top five, only piccolo is prohibited. “It’s oxymoronic that it is legal but it is injurious. Those two things are not in congruence,” Duque said. Next page

Uproar over OFW death: PH slams Kuwait defiance of deal THE Philippines could again stop the deployment of workers to Kuwait unless the authorities there secured justice for a Filipina who was killed by the wife of her employer, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said Wednesday. Filipino authorities are working to repatriate the remains of the victim, Jeanelyn Villavende, who was from Nuralla in South Cotabato. The Palace on Wednesday expressed outrage over Villavende’s killing, calling it a “disregard” of an agreement that seeks to ensure the protection of workers there.

Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo condoled with the family of Villavende whose death was reported by the Department of Foreign Affairs on Monday. “We consider Jeanelyn’s tragic death a clear disregard of the agreement signed by both our country and Kuwait in 2018, which seeks to uphold and promote the protection of the rights and welfare of our workers in Kuwait, Panelo said in a statement.
