HE 12-day 30th Southeast Asian Games opened Saturday with a dazzling spectacular of music, dance and performances beamed nationwide from the 55,000-seat Philippine Arena north of Manila, depicting the Filipinos’ rich cultural heritage and talent to enthrall audiences from TawiTawi to Batanes. Directed by Palanca award-winning playwright Floy Quintos, the world-class performances featured homegrown talents and craftsmanship, while delivering a message of unity among Southeast Asian countries. The Black Eyed Peas’ apl.de.ap and Lani Misalucha led the musical performances to welcome the 5,630 athletes to the Games, which the country is hosting for the fourth time, the first in 1981. President Rodrigo Duterte, who officially declared the Games open, was wonderstruck as the musical performances unfurled and the best athletes from the 11 Southeast Turn to A2 Asian countries marched one after the other. Turn to A2 Considered the biggest in the 30-year history of the Southeast Asian Games, this year’s staging of the biennial competition opens with a dazzling display of fireworks, dances and performances with two of the SEA leaders President Rodrigo Duterte, who declared the games open, and Brunei Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (second panel from left) along with living legends taking part at the sprawling Philippine Arena in Bulacan.

GAMES VENUES FACE THREAT OF 'KAMMURI' By Joel E. Zurbano

TYPHOON Kammuri, feared to drench several SEA Games venues next week, has slowed down but maintained its strength as it barreled closer to the Philippines, weather forecasters said Saturday. “Intensification into a super typhoon is less likely at this time but not ruled out,”the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said. The moment it enters the Philippine Area of Responsibility, Kammuri will be named Tisoy, PAGASA said in its 11 a.m. advisory Saturday. Most areas in Central Luzon, Southern Luzon, and Metro Manila—where SEA Games venues are located—will experience strong winds and heavy rains starting Tuesday, state weather forecasters said. Kammuri is expected to enter PAR late Saturday and make landfall in Camarines Sur on Sunday. As of 10 a.m., the typhoon was spotted 1,220 kilometers east of Southern Luzon with maximum sustained winds of 150 kilometers per hour and gustiness of up to 158 kph. Meanwhile, the environmentalist group Ecowaste Coalition appealed to spectators to keep the venues of the 30th SEA Games waste-free as the multi-sport regional event officially started. Turn to A2
