By Vito Barcelo SOME 10-million Filipinos were unemployed in the third quarter of 2019, or 21.5 percent jobless, up from 20.7 percent compared to 19.7 percent in March this year, according to the latest Social Weather Stations survey results released Saturday. The latest survey, from Sept. 2730, revealed that it found the unemployment rate among Filipinos at 21.5 percent, an increase from 20.7 percent last June and 19.7 percent in March. Out of the 21.5 percent, 9.5 percent (or 4.4 million) said they voluntarily left their job, 3.5 percent (or 1.6 million) are first-time job seekers. Other respondents said they became unemployed after their contracts ended and were no longer renewed (5.8 percent), the operations of their previous employers closed (1.3 percent), or were laid off (1.3 percent). The pollster said that adult joblessness rose in Balance Luzon (25 percent), Mindanao (19.9 percent) and Metro Manila (24.5 percent). As for the Visayas, the percentage for unemployment fell at 11.8 percent, compared to 18.1 percent recorded last June. The survey also found that the joblessness rate was significantly higher among women, at 31.4 percent, rather than among men, rating at 14.6 percent. Because of this, the SWS said, the joblessness rate gender gap rose to 16.8 percent in September, Turn to A2

THE National Capital Region Police Office on Saturday launched a 24hour police hotline for the 30th Southeast Asian Games. NCRPO chief Debold Sinas led the launching ceremony during the Final Coordinating Meeting of Task Force NCR at the Conference Room in Camp Bagong Diwa, Bicutan, Taguig City. The NCRPO SEA Games SMS and Viber hotline numbers are: 0915-983-4636 for Globe subscribers and 0998-325-5626 for Smart subscribers. “However, eyeing the sustainabilty mechanism of the hotline, only SMS and Viber messages will be accounted on the hotlines and strictly no calls at all,” said Sinas in a statement. He assured the public of prompt response to queries, reports and complaints regarding SEA Games made through its official hotline. The hotlines, according to Sinas, will be monitored 24/7 by trained and competent policemen assigned in the Operations Division at the NCRPO headquarters. Information relayed to the hotlines will be referred to the concerned Task Group Commanders or units for immediate action. “We are prepared to make this anticipated biennial regional multisport event smooth and peaceful,” said Sinas. DUTERTE SEEKS QUIBOLOY-LIKE POWERS TO STOP CORRUPTION By Vito Barcelo PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte wished he could have the same power with his friend Pastor Apollo Quiboloy, whom he believed stopped one of the major earthquakes that hit Mindanao in October, to stop corruption in the government. “I wished that I could have the same power to stop graft just by telling corrupt individuals to do so,” the President said during the launching of a hotel in Davao City on Friday night. “I believe in Pastor Quiboloy when he said that ‘stop’. It stopped, what’s the
trouble? Stop it! It was a coincidence that the earthquake stopped,” Duterte said. “If I can only have that power against corrupt [people] to stop, because you know that here, the Filipinos, you cannot stop [them],” he added. Earlier, Duterte said he would fire any government official found guilty of irregularities, following reports that two of his Cabinet men were being investigated by the Presidential Anti-Corruption Commission. The President said he learned about the PACC investigation but stressed that the Cabinet officials should be accorded due process. Turn to A2
