Rada OFFSHORE gaming firms should be taxed, Malacañang said Tuesday, contradicting Solicitor General Jose Calida and siding with Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III on the issue. “While the matter is being studied at length by the DOF [Department of Finance], what is clear is that the state cannot be denied its right to collect on all applicable taxes on any entity or individual,” Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said. Panelo also noted that the DOF has the primary mandate to “formulate, institutionalize and administer fiscal policies in coordination with other concerned subdivisions, agencies and instrumentalities of government.” “As such, the discretion of the DOF, alongside the Bureau of Internal Revenue [BIR], carries significant weight on matters of taxation,” he said. Calida previously said POGOs could not be taxed by the government based on the “source of income” rule under the Tax Code of the Philippines, while Dominguez said it was not the Office of

RESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday night said he had ordered government agencies to restrict Vice President Leni Robredo’s access to confidential information on the illegal drug menace, saying she just “needs to know.”
PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday night confirmed that he had ordered Agriculture Secretary William Dar to suspend rice importation, as he asked Congress to allocate funds to buy “palay” or unhusked rice from local farmers. Duterte, who earlier apologized to local rice farmers over the drop of prices of the staple, said he is suspending its importation since it is now “harvest time.” “If you don’t want problems, buy all the produce of local farmers. If their farm gate [prices] are costly, no problem,” the President said in a press conference, addressing lawmakers. Congress has approved a measure that allows government agencies to use the remaining ₱6.97-billion rice subsidy fund to buy palay from local farmers. In February, Duterte signed the Rice Tariffication Law allowing private firms to import rice if they secure
In a late-night press conference, Duterte said he “did not need to fire” Robredo from the Inter-Agency Committee Against Illegal Drugs (ICAD), but also did not want to appoint her back into the Cabinet since she would “jeopardize” state secrets -- and said he does not trust her. Instead, the President said Robredo could only provide guidance to the 21-member ICAD that she has been tasked to lead. “You can give the directions, you can give the guidance. But you do not have to go there and waggle inside the law enforcement process,” Duterte said. Speaking to Palace reporters, Duterte also accused Robredo of “grandstanding” and called her a “scatterbrain” for

VAULTED ceilings and rows of stone columns stretch into the humid darkness deep below the Philippine capital, where workers are transforming a more-than-century-old underground reservoir into a draw for tourists. The sparks of welding guns illuminate the damp contours of El Deposito, an abandoned Spanish colonial-era relic with a rich history that has been hidden from view for decades. “[El Deposito] has a very colourful history that we Filipinos must appreciate and value even after all these years,” Kaye Oliveros, curator for the soon-to-be-opened site told AFP. Crafted from volcanic rock and completed 137 years ago, the underground cavern was made to hold 14 million gallons (53 million liters) of Next page
