FIERCE CLASHES RAGE IN HK; DFA RULES OUT EVAC A POLICE officer was struck in the leg by an arrow shot by a Hong Kong activist on Sunday, the city’s force said, as fierce clashes raged at a university which has become a fulcrum of pro-democracy protests. Activists have vowed to “squeeze the economy” as the increasingly divided city reels from one of the worst weeks of violence in the months-long crisis. A statement said he was taken to hospital in “a conscious state.” Police deployed water cannon and tear gas against pro-
testers occupying the campus in the Hung Hom area of Kowloon, now a key battleground as the demonstrators fight to keep a stranglehold on the Cross-Harbor Tunnel nearby, blocked since Tuesday. Protests have swept the global financial hub since June as many in the city of 7.5 million people have vented fury at eroding freedoms under Chinese rule. human rights abuses by the Philippine government. This repression of trade unionists is a shameful attempt to silence people’s rights and freedoms. More than ever, we must stand on the side of global human rights. Sanders was reacting to a report that 57 members of labor and civil groups in the Philippines were arrested and detained during simultaneous raids in Bacolod City, Negros Oriental and Manila in Oct. 31. The Philippine National Police raided the offices of the Kilusang Mayo Uno,
Gabriela Negros Center, and the Negros Federation of Sugar Workers. The International Trade Union Confederation has condemned the arrest of unionists and leftist groups. “Under the cover of being tough on crime, this government is targeting human and trade union rights defenders as part of a deliberate political strategy that relies on the suppression of people’s rights and freedoms,” said ITUC General Secretary Sharan Burrow. Life taking its toll on me, says Rody By MJ Blancaflor DESPITE President Rodrigo Duterte’s admission that he is in bad shape due to old age, Malacañang on Sunday said he would continue fulfilling his mandate to serve the public. “Whatever ailment an elderly has, ordinarily, he has that. But he will continue working. He said, ‘I’ll perform my duties, whatever happens to me,’” Panelo said in radio interview. “If you will notice, his schedule does not change, despite his health issues.
