Gordon: Senate report on Albayalde, ninja cops on hold By Macon Ramos-Araneta

DUE to some “vital changes,” the Senate deferred Thursday night the release of the report of its investigation into the illicit drug trade of the “ninja cops,”

which triggered the resignation of Philippine National Police Chief General Oscar Albayalde, who was tagged as their protector. Senate justice and Blue Ribbon committees chairman Senator Richard

Gordon described as “hard hitting” the commitee report, which detailed the recycling of confiscated drugs and switching of arrested drug suspects by the “ninja cops.” Gordon earlier said the panel would

recommend charges against Albayalde but did not elaborate. At least three senators believe there is sufficient evidence to charge Albayalde for corruption in the ninja cops case. Next page

Solons urge Speaker: Honor term-sharing By Maricel V. Cruz and MJ Blancaflor TWO members of the Makabayan Bloc on Thursday urged Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano to abide by the term-sharing agreement with Rep. Lord Allan Velasco of Marinduque, after expressing serious doubts about his intent to step down after 15 months in office. Party-list Representatives Arlene Brosas of Gabriela and France Castro of ACT Teachers said that the agreement will be a sham if Cayetano stays on and will not give way to Velasco as part of the agreement that was brokered by President Rodrigo Duterte shortly before the 18th Congress opened. President Duterte earlier said Cayetano will serve as Speaker in the first 15 months, while Velasco will occupy the post in the remaining 21 months. Next page

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte dressed down police officials during a joint command conference at the Palace Tuesday night for being part of the drug problem instead of being the solution, Senator Christopher Go said Thursday. Go, a close aide of the President, quoted him as saying to them in Filipino: “How can I complete my campaign against drugs if you are the problem?” Go said the President expressed his disappointment over the latest scandal in which crooked police officers—the so-called ninja cops--sold confiscated drugs, even though he had doubled policemen’s salaries. Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said the President did not mention who would replace Oscar Albayalde as chief of the Philippine National Police, after he abruptly resigned in the wake of the ninja cops scandal. PNP officer-in-charge Lt. Gen. Archie Gamboa said he was ready for the challenge, even though his appointment is temporary. “It’s a challenge [to] my leadership, even if I am just the OIC, that I should do something about the impression of the President,” Gamboa said in an interview with radio dzMM.
