‘Choose what’s good, uplifting’ Pope asks world leaders to bring peace to ME
Rody hopes May polls ‘reflect true will of the people’
VATICAN CITY—Pope Francis on Sunday urged world leaders to try again to bring peace to Libya and in Syria where millions of refugees and people displaced by conflict should be helped to return home. In his traditional Easter Sunday address to the faithful at the Vatican, where some 70,000 were gathered in Saint Peter’s square, the pope also expressed his “sadness” at news of the deadly bomb attacks on churches and hotels in Sri Lanka. Francis noted how in Libya violence has flared up again as strongman Khalifa Haftar’s Libyan National Army attacked Tripoli, seat of the UN-backed government. “May conflict and bloodshed cease in Libya, where defenseless people are once more dying in recent weeks,” Francis said. “I urge the parties involved to choose dialogue over force and to avoid reopening wounds left by a decade of conflicts and political instability.” In Syria, where President Bashar AlAssad has steadily recovered territory lost to rebel groups, the pope lamented the fate of “the beloved Syrian people, victims of an ongoing conflict to which we risk becoming ever more resigned and even indifferent.” “Now is instead the time for a renewed commitment for a political solution able to respond to people’s legitimate

“It is truly an occasion of hope and inspiration for all of us as we commemorate the narrative of the Savior’s sacrifice on the cross and how He restored us to the fullness of life,” he said in his message. “May this time of new beginnings inspire us to always choose what is good and uplifting,” he said. “I trust that this season of Easter will be a blessed time for us to rekindle our shared commitment in nation-building, especially in the upcoming midterm elections.” “May it become an exercise of integrity and reflect the true will of the people,” he added. “It is my hope that the evil caused by the societal ills we are confronting today will be swept away by our strong faith in the Almighty.” Meanwhile, the election transparency watchdog Mata sa Balota petitioned the Commission on Elections to use the Verified Paper Audit Trail or VVPAT to ensure clean polls on May 13 and avoid widespread cheating as was alleged for the 2016 elections. Melchor Magdamo, one of Mata sa Balota’s lawyers, also asked the Comelec to enforce the Supreme Court ruling on the VVPAT. He said the law allows a voter’s VVPAT to be photographed to be used as proof of potential cheating on the Next page
HOUSE Speaker Gloria Macapagal Arroyo said Sunday she respects the decision of President Rodrigo Duterte to veto P95.3 billion worth of budgets under the 2019 national budget. “It’s done and we trust the President’s judgment,” she said. The President earlier signed the national budget into law as Republic Act No. 11260 or the General Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2019 on April 15, but vetoed several appropriations under the Department of Public Works and Highways, Department of Labor and Employment-National Labor Relations Commission, Department of Agriculture, Department of Health and Department of Trade and Industry. “Even me, I used to line veto. Every year I partially vetoed the budget,” Arroyo, a former president, said. Camarines Sur Rep. Rolando Andaya Jr., House committee on appropriations

PROVINCIAL buses will be banned from loading and unloading passengers on EDSA starting April 22 as part of the dry run for a ban on provincial buses, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority said Sunday. MMDA spokesman Celine Pialago said the authorities hoped to close all provincial bus terminals on EDSA by June. There will be “no apprehensions” during the dry run but the authorities will “strictly implement... the rule prohibiting provincial buses from loading and unloading commuters on EDSA, “ Pialago told ANC. The franchise of provincial buses is “terminal-to-terminal,” which bars them from stopping on EDSA and other major
