FDA revokes Dengvaxia certificate THE Food and Drug Administration has permanently canceled the certificates of product registration of the anti-dengue vaccine Dengvaxia over the continued failure of its manufacturer, Sanofi Pasteur Inc., to submit post-approval commitment documents. In a statement Tuesday, FDA Director General Nela Charade G. Puno accused the giant French pharmaceutical firm of continuously defying FDA rules and regulations. “Its brazen defiance of FDA’s directives and its continued failure to comply leaves us no other recourse but to impose the maximum penalty of revocation of the CPRs covering the Dengvaxia products.” Puno said. In an order signed by Puno Dec. 21, 2018, the FDA ordered Sanofi to immediately surrender the original CPRs of its Dengvaxia-based products. FDA pointed out that as of Dec. 17, 2018, its Center for Drug Regulation and Research, in coordination with its Task Force Dengvaxia, confirmed that Sanofi has still not submitted its post marketing authorization requirements. The FDA also reminded Sanofi that pursuant to the revocation of the CPRs, it is unlawful to import, sell, or distribute the products. The CDRR is also directed to defer the processing of any submission and application by Sanofi regarding Dengvaxia and Dengvaxia-MD. The FDA had initially suspended the CPR for Dengvaxia in 2017 and ordered Sanofi to comply with its directives. Three days after President Rodrigo Duterte signed the rice tariffication bill into law, Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo sought to allay farmers’ fears that the RCEF would fall into corrupt hands, like the fertilizer fund did in 2004. “Good governance is the hallmark of the Duterte administration and the President has zero tolerance against corruption and wastage of taxpayers’ money. We continue to exercise accountability and transparency in all levels of the bureaucracy,” Panelo said in a statement. Panelo said the Agriculture secretary will oversee the proper and responsible use of the rice fund. “The Department of Agriculture, in consultation with farmers’ cooperatives and organizations as well as local government units, shall also validate and update the master list of eligible beneficiaries, which include farmers, farm workers, rice cooperatives and associaNext page tions,” he said.

2 senators: Sara has makings of good president SENATOR Panfilo Lacson on Tuesday said Davao City mayor and presidential daughter Sara Duterte still remains as his top choice among the “young emerging leaders” to become the next president of the country. Lacson made the remark when asked about the possibility of Duterte’s bid for presidency in 2022. “Just like what I’ve said during a news forum–among the young emerging lead-

ers, Mayor Sara Duterte is somebody we may be looking at,” Lacson told reporters in a message. Lacson earlier said during a media briefing last year that Sara Duterte was his “top choice” among the young leaders in politics, saying she had “good leadership qualities,” and was “strong-willed, stern, vibrant, and progressive-minded.” Senator Juan Edgardo Angara, meanwhile, said the Davao City mayor has

the “makings of a good president” and has the best mentor—President Rodrigo Duterte himself. “Mayor Sara has the training, experience, savvy and going around the country with HNP [Hugpong ng Pagbabago regional party] will only give her a better perspective on the country’s problems,” Angara said. Sara Duterte said she will decide on her plans to run for president by 2021. PNA

‘Defanged’ NFA definite to lose workers—chief NATIONAL Food Authority chief Tomas Escarez Tuesday deplored the “definite” worker layoff in the agency following President Rodrigo Duterte’s approval of the rice tariffication law. The tariffication law, which will replace the present quotas on rice imports with tax, removes the NFA’s power to import and distribute cheaper grain, leaving it with the sole task of buying grain from farmers to maintain buffer stocks, Escarez told radio dzMM, in a broadcast beamed nationwide. Buffer stocks intended for calamities and emergencies should last for 15 days. Its management does not require many employees, he said. The NFA is tasked to stabilize prices by buying grain from farmers and selling it at P27 and P32, cheaper compared to commercial rice. With NFA’s new role requiring less manpower, worker layoff is certain, Escarez said. In a related development, Senator Cynthia Villar blasted the NFA for blocking the rice tariffication as it would lose the power to contol rice importation. “Because that was the only power removed from it. But they can still buy rice from farmers. They will retain the same budget, but the instruction is to buy Next page
