MILF FACTION THREATENED COTABATO, MAYOR SAYS Ghadzali Jaafar
Caption name
A COMMANDER of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front warned that “there will be consequences” for those who voted against Cotabato City’s inclusion in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, Mayor Cynthia Guiani said Thursday. This came after a deadly bomb attack killed two people and wounded 34 others near a mall in Cotabato on Dec. 31. The blast came weeks before a Jan. 21 plebiscite that will determine the composition of the BARMM, the product of a 2014 agreement between the government and the MILF.
In an interview with the ANC news channel, Guiani said she had met with MILF commander Wahig Tundok to try to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict of bringing Cotabato into the BARMM. But to the mayor’s dismay, Tundok said his MILF faction was “willing to risk everything just to get Cotabato City. That’s a threat. It scares the people,” Guiani told ANC. The commander had issued the warning in an online video before the blast, showing the MILF group’s insincerity, the mayor said. “In that interview, he said that they will

Mayor MILF chairman Al Haj Murad Ebra- Cynthia him condemned the attack as “an act of Guiani cowardice, inhuman, and atrocious.” In a statement, Murad said: “We are saddened by the fact that this incident occurred at a time while we are in the thick of preparations for the plebiscite on the ratification of the Bangsamoro Organic Law [BOL] on January 21, 2019.” Next page

Palace: No apologies for ‘made up’ story By Nat Mariano THERE will be no apologies from President Rodrigo Duterte over his “madeup” story touching a maid, the Palace said Thursday, insisting such remark was only “concocted” to dramatize and call out the hypocrisy in the Catholic Church. Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo reiterated that Duterte’s confession
to a priest when he was a teenager was made up to point out the hypocrisy of Church leaders. “We said that was a made-up story, which is his way of criticizing the hypocrisy of some members of the clergies (sic), specifically the priest who sexually abused him when he was still a student as well as his fellow students at that time,” Panelo told a Palace press briefing. Thursday that the death toll from Usman has reached 122, significantly higher than the 85 reported on Wednesday. The figures have yet to be verified. The region’s Office of Civil Defense, on the other hand, said the death toll in the Bicol region alone had reached 105, with 23 people missing and 53 people injured. Usman, considered one of the deadliest storms since Super Typhoon “Ompong,” also devastated the region’s agriculture with losses of up to P816.17 million, the Department of Agriculture said. Panelo said that while local government units did everything they could to prepare for Usman, “there are things you cannot control.” Next page
