Sara tells pa to junk peace gab with Reds By F. Pearl A. Gajunera DAVAO CITY—Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte on Friday asked her father, President Rodrigo Duterte, to reconsider his decision to reopen peace talks with the communist rebels, casting doubts on their sincerity after they burned close to a dozen pieces of heavy equipment in three barangays here. “I believe the insurgency problem can only be ended peacefully if the NDFP [National Democratic Front of the Philippines] and the Communist Party of the Philippines and its armed wing, the New People’s Army [NPA], are sincere, honest, and committed to working toward the direction of peace and reciprocate the gesture offered by the government,” the mayor said. “But there are no indications at all that they are willing to negotiate for a peaceful resolution of the conflict,” she said. On Thursday, police repelled communist rebels who tried to overrun a police station in Butuan City, Agusan del Norte. A report from Camp Col. Rafael C. Rodriguez in Butuan City said local police officers of Station 5 fought off 40 NPA rebels in

OLICITOR General Jose Calida on Friday played down the probative value of the nine statements of assets, liabilities and net worth recovered by Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno and said she was again misleading the public. Calida said Sereno’s recovery of the missing SALNs would not weaken the quo warranto petition he filed against her before the Supreme Court, because those nine documents were not submitted to the Judicial and Bar Council when she applied for the post

in 2012. “Sereno again attempts to mislead the public,” Calida said in a text message. “It has no bearing in the quo warranto case because she didn’t submit them to the JBC at the time these were

required,” he added. President Rodrigo Duterte, meanwhile, kept up his scathing attacks on the chief justice, calling her “bobo” (stupid), and saying she should have been ousted a long time ago. Duterte added 12 years—the time left in Sereno’s term—was “too long for an ignorant chief justice.” “It’s too long. That’s enough. Give way. If I were you, I will resign,” he said. In contrast, some senators noted that with the SALNs surfacing, the main cause of the petition has been rendered moot. “The SC therefore has no other recourse but to remove it,” Senator Antonio Trillanes Next page IV told the Standard.

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte on Friday threatened to arrest any investigators from the International Criminal Court who would dare enter the country to investigate the government’s war on drugs, saying the UN tribunal has no jurisdiction in the Philippines. In a speech in Davao after arriving from China, Duterte said the ICC wants to portray him to the world as a human rights violator, citing the numerous deaths of suspected drug pushers and users under the government’s “Oplan Tokhang.” He also slammed ICC prosecutor Fatou Bensouda for insisting on conducting an investigation, even though the Philippines is no longer an ICC member. PET denies Leni’s plea on shading limit By Rey E. Requejo THE Supreme Court, acting as the Presidential Electoral Tribunal, has junked Vice President Leni Robredo’s motion asking that it follow the shading threshold set by the Commission on Elections to consider votes as valid during the revision of votes in the 2016 vice presidential race. Robredo’s claim that the Comelec applies a 25-percent threshold in determining a valid vote is inaccurate, the PET ruled in a resolution signed by Clerk of Court Edgar Aricheta.

The Robredo camp had asked the PET to apply the 25-percent threshold for ballot shading when it begins the manual recount of vice presidential votes from over 5,000 ballot boxes from three provinces as part of the electoral protest filed by former senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr. “The Court is not aware of any Comelec resolution that states the applicability of a 25-percent threshold; and the tribunal cannot treat the Random Manual Audit Guidelines and Report as proof of the threshold used by the Comelec,” the PET said. THE National Privacy Commission on Friday opened an investigation into Facebook following the recent admission of the social media giant’s founder Mark Zuckerberg of the company’s faults in the Cambridge Analytica data scandal that affected Filipino users of the online network. In a letter to Zuckerberg, the Commission asked Facebook to submit several documents relevant to the case to establish the scope and impact of the incident to Filipino data subjects. “We are launching an investigation into Facebook to determine whether there was an unauthorized processing of the personal data of Filipinos, and other possible violations of the Data Privacy Act of 2012,” said an excerpt from the letter. This developed as President Rodrigo Duterte denied hiring Cambridge Analytica for his election campaign that led to his landslide victory in the 2016 presidential elections. He said he might not be the President right now if he had tapped the services of the consultancy firm. Next page
