PPOSITION lawmaker Magdalo Party-list Rep. Gary Alejano on Saturday claimed the Duterte administration had ordered the Armed Forces of the Philippines to stop patrolling the disputed West Philippine Sea, a claim immediately impugned by Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana.
“I received information that the Duterte administration ordered our Armed Forces not to patrol West Philippine Sea anymore,” Alejano said, citing what he called military sources. “Isn’t that an impeachable offsense already?” he asked during a weekend forum. Alejano, however, clarified he did not have hard evidence to support his claim but added he trusted his sources. “I’m confident with the information coming from my sources,” he said. But Lorenzana, sought for comment, underlined “there was no such order” but he stopped short of elaborating. The lawmaker also claimed the alleged order to stop patrols in the disputed waters had been in place since the latter part of 2017. REPEAL OF TRAIN LAW PUSHED By Maricel V. Cruz A MILITANT lawmaker on Saturday appealed to the House leadership to prioritize the passage of a measure which repeals the ‘antipeople” provisions of the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) Law. Anakpawis Party-list Rep. Ariel Casilao said House leaders would be able to prove being the true representatives of the Filipino people if they acted on House Bill 7653 filed by the Makabayan Bloc. Casilao was one of the co-authors. HB 7653 proposes to strike out the new add-on taxes on prices on basic products, including oil and sweetened products. It also wants to restore the exemption of electricity sales and low-cost housing from Value Added Tax.
“Oil price hike which is the nth of this year had already jacked up the prices of fuel products to unprecedented heights. Since the implementation of the TRAIN Law, oil companies and the government are having a blast in increasing the prices,” he said. Casilao also assailed the continuing implementation of the Oil Deregulation Law. This, he said, has been the main weapon of oil companies in justifying price increases of their products. “Under the law, the government has no control on pricing, even regulating oil prices. Meaning, the public is held hostage of (sic) oil companies,” Casilao said. He said petroleum products were widely used for electricity and transportation as well as for producing and processing a wide array of goods and services. Turn to A2
DUTERTE-SERENO WORD WAR RAGES By Vito Barcelo PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte described ousted Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno as an unrespectable lawyer filled with gimmickry to gain sympathy as word war between the two flared up anew. The President’s remark was in response to the former SC Chief Justice’s recent verbal attack on the chief executive that the firing of top government officials was “mere
gimmickry” and all for show. “ I don’t believe her. And I don’t respect her also (sic). Full of gimmick eh. She’s the one who makes gimmick, while we do our job,” the President said in his speech during the inauguration of Mactan-Cebu International Airport. The President erupted in anger after Sereno said the President was recycling his officials who were fired after being found to be engaged in graft and corruption and reappointed to other agencies. Sereno accused the President of having a hand in her ouster but Duterte has repeatedly denied this, yet Solicitor General Jose Calida initiated the quo warranto petition that led to her removal from the Supreme Court. DEPED CAUTIONS PNP ON SPOT CHECK THE Department of Education is asking the Philippine National Police for a meeting regarding the latter’s plan to conduct surprise inspections of student lockers as part of its anti-drug campaign. In an interview on Super Radyo dzBB on Saturday, DepEd Undersecretary Nepomuceno Malaluan said Education Secretary Leonor Briones had expressed concern regarding the PNP plan. National Capital Region Police Office director Chief Supt. Guillermo Eleazar on Wednesday proposed to implement random bag and locker inspections in schools to nip the country’s drug problem in the bud. “Briones wants to make sure we have coordination and protocols are in place,” Malaluan said. “If there are law enforcement operations or initiatives that would, example, target students, we would like that to be properly coordinated with the Department of Education due to considerations such as child protection policy and schools as zones of peace,” Malaluan said. Malaluan noted that for the school year opening last Monday, the DepEd and the PNP coordinated well, and he was confident this would continue for the drug prevention campaign.
