By Nat Mariano, Francisco Tuyay, Joel Zurbano, Rio Araja and Maricel Cruz

HILIPPINE National Police chief Dir. Gen. Oscar Albayalde on Thursday warned college professors who teach communist ideologies that they will be charged with contempt as he scolded students of state universities for biting the hand of the government that shoulders their free education.

P

Albayalde made the statement even as Malacañang downplayed concerns that the hunt for conspirators in the Red October plot to oust President Rodrigo Duterte will lead to a crackdown against student activists. Armed Forces deputy chief of staff for operations Brig. Gen. Antonio Parlade Jr. on Wednesday identified 18 colleges and universities that have allegedly been tapped for communist recruitment. “What if we charge teachers who instigate their students? They should also be charged for contempt for teaching such things to our students. We in the PNP sacrifice our lives for our country. We are trying to save generations. Yet we teach these [rebellious Next page Oscar Albayalde

Bertiz draws ethics ‘Mocha isn’t off the hook just yet’ raps from workers Rody in hospital ‘for 2nd opinion’

By Nat Mariano

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte on Thursday admitted that he sought a second opinion at Cardinal Santos on Wednesday after undergoing endoscopy and colonoscopy three weeks ago. Duterte contradicted an earlier statement of his spokesman, Harry Roque, who denied the President was absent from an engagement Wednesday evening because he went to the said hospital. “Three weeks ago I had my endoscopy and colonoscopy. I was about to have a Cabinet meeting [Wednesday] but [based on] the reading on my medical procedures, somebody advised my doctor to repeat and get some samples there for both (colonoscopy and endoscopy). So I stayed there for one hour in Cardinal Santos,” the President said yesterday. “If it’s cancer, it’s cancer. If it’s third stage, no more treatment. I will no longer prolong my agony in the office,” Next page Duterte said.

THE Office of the Ombudsman said Thursday it will continue its investigation into complaints against Mocha Uson, despite her resignation as Communications assistant secretary. Ombudsman Samuel Martires said Uson’s resignation had nothing to do with the ongoing probe of the complaints filed by Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, Akbayan Youth and the Philippine Federation of the Death.

MIGRANT Filipino workers have turned against their supposed representative in Congress and filed an ethics complaint against him. Migrante International, an advocate of migrant workers’ rights, filed the case against Party-list Rep. Aniceto Bertiz III of ACT-OFW on Thursday. Chairman Arman Hernando of Migrante said Bertiz does not deserve a seat in the House not only because he does not truly represent the Filipino migrant workers but because of his alleged arrogance as a public servant. A PRO-ADMINISTRATION lawmaker on Thursday sought the repeal of the excise tax imposed on fuel under Republic Act 10963 or the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion Law. House Bill 8369 by Surigao del Norte Rep. Robert Ace Barbers seeks to amend Section 43 of the TRAIN Law that imposes excise taxes on all petroleum products, and to revert to the old rates based on the National Internal Revenue Code.

“Prices of fuel have increased significantly and will be much higher on the next tranche of implementation of TRAIN in 2019 and 2020,” Barbers said. “The increase in fuel prices affects the prices of basic goods and services as producers or manufacturers may pass production costs to consumers.” He said while the objectives of the TRAIN Law are laudable, it should be adaptable to change, especially now that prices have gone so high. “As legislators, it is our duty to hear the cry of the poor,” he said.
