Requejo EMBATTLED Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno on Monday accused President Rodrigo Duterte of being behind the move to oust her through a quo warranto petition filed before the Supreme Court. “Mr. President, if you say that you have no hand in this, please explain why Solicitor General [Jose] Calida, who reports to you, filed the quo warranto petition,” Sereno said in Filipino at an event organized by the Movement Against Tyranny. “Is that the way it is, President Duterte? That I should be removed either by quo warranto or impeachment?” the chief jusNext page tice added.

New Justice head Associate justice singled out takes second look for ‘harboring ill will’ vs CJ at pork, drug cases By Rey E. Requejo NEWLY appointed Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said Sunday he will review the decisions of the Justice department that resulted in the resignation of Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II last week. He said he will also review the dismissal of the drug charges against Cebuano businessman Peter Lim and self-confessed drug trader Kerwin Espinosa that angered President Rodrigo Duterte. He also vowed to review the provisional coverage of pork-barrel scam queen Janet Lim-Napoles in the government’s witness protection program. “I will review the previous actions on the Espinosa and Napoles cases. That’s top priority in view of the public interest,” Guevarra said in a text message. “I will reserve any judgment, though, till I have thoroughly studied the matter. For now I’m forming a small legal team to assist me on top of the veteran guys at the DoJ.” But Guevarra said he would not be like Aguirre or former Justice secretary and now detained Senator Leila de Lima in terms of granting media interviews. Teresita Leonardo-de Castro
CHIEF Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno on Monday lashed out at Associate Justice Teresita Leonardo-de Castro for harboring resentment against her since she was appointed to head the Supreme Court in 2012. “Although most of them said, ‘All right, we will cooperate,’ there was one justice, Justice Teresita de Castro, who said, ‘I will never forgive you for accepting the Chief Justiceship.’ ‘You should not even have applied in the first place,’” Sereno said, in a speech before a Day of Valor program organized by the Movement Against Tyranny.
“I’m putting you [Sereno] on notice that I am now your enemy and you have to be out of the Supreme Court,” Duterte said before flying to China for an economic forum. “I held my temper before because she’s a woman. This time I’m asking the congressmen and the Speaker: ‘Do it now. Cut out the drama, or else I will do it for you’,” he added. Duterte appeared enraged by Sereno’s statement linking him to the quo warranto petition filed against her before the Supreme Court by Solicitor General Jose Calida. “I’m not into the habit of going after my enemies. I have no history on that,” Duterte said in a mix of English and Filipino. “You, Sereno, I told you I did not involve myself in this [but] if you are insisting, then count me in. Count me in and I will let Calida do his best.” Saying that Congress could proceed
