TSUNAMI DEATH TOLL HITS 832; LOOTING SPREADS PALU, Indonesia—The death toll from a powerful earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia leapt to 832 Sunday, as stunned people on the stricken island of Sulawesi struggled to find food and water and looting spread. The new toll announced by the national disaster agency was almost double the previous figure. Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla said the final number of dead could be in the “thousands.” “It feels very tense,” said 35-yearold mother Risa Kusuma, comforting her feverish baby boy at an evacuation center in the gutted coastal city of Palu. “Every minute an ambulance brings in bodies. HE PRICE of cooking gas will go up by P2.35 a kilo, adding P25.85 to the cost of an 11-kilo tank to reflect higher contract prices for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in the world market for October.

MECO Chairman Angelito Banayo said the United States will hand over the bells by Christmas this year. “The Balangiga bells will be returned to the parish church of Balangiga in Eastern Samar, and directly therefore to the people of Balangiga,” Banayo said in his column in Manila Standard. “They will ring out for the entire country, as a national treasure, as a relic of the indomitable spirit of our people for freedom and against foreign colonialism,” he added. Dengue watch: 425 more nurses needed to check on victims REP. Johnny Pimentel said Sunday the Department of Health is spending another P213 million next year to deploy 425 more nurses “to keep an eye on the school children who received shots of the anti-dengue vaccine Dengvaxia.” “The nurses will visit public schools to check on the health condition of the vaccinees, while others will be assigned to hospitals to keep close tabs on the admissions of vaccinees,” Pimentel said. “The extra provision is already factored into the [department’s] proposed budget for 2019, and is on top of the P1.16 billion contained in the supplemental appropriations bill for this year that we already approved to support Dengvaxia vaccinees.” Pimentel is a former chairman of the House good government and accountability committee that conducted a joint inquiry with the congressional health panel into the government’s controversial anti-dengue Next page immunization program.
