Hidilyn snatches gold; hoopsters lose to China By Riera U. Mallari JAKARTA — Hidilyn Diaz added an Asian Games gold medal into her growing legend by topping the Women’s 53kg Division of the Weightlifting Competitions at the Jakarta International Expo Hall here on Tuesday night. The silver medalist of the Rio Olympics submitted 92 kgs in the snatch and 207 in the Clean & Jerk for a total of 207, just enough to crush the challenge of Turkmenistan’s Kristina Shermetova, who had a 206 total for the silver. Diaz’s gold catapulted the Philippine Delegation to 14th overall in the medal standings with one gold and four bronze medals barely two days into the Asian Games featuring Asia’s best athletes.

IAMEN Airlines must pay the Manila International Airport Authority about P15 million for the recovery operation of its disabled aircraft that overshot the main runway of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on Aug. 16.
PH needs citizens like Ninoy—Rody
“All we spent during the recovery operations will be charged to Xiamen Airlines,” MIAA general manager Eddie Monreal said Tuesday. Monreal’s statement came as transport officials fended off criticism that the 36 hours taken to clear the runway was far too long, saying that “recovering a disabled aircraft is far different from towing a bus or a car.” In an interview on the ANC news channel, Monreal said his agency replaced 14 units of edge lights that were damaged when the plane veered off the runway. This was done immediately, he said, because the edge lights are impor-
PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte said Tuesday the country needs more citizens like former senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., in commemoration of the celebrated opposition senator’s 35th death anniversary. “In this time of real and lasting change, we need more citizens like him, so we can steer our country towards the direction where a brighter and better future awaits us all,” said the President in a statement. Duterte said Aquino died while fighting to restore peace and democracy in the Philippines. “More than three decades ago, Benig-

Manpower and other equipment rentals brought the cost to about P15 million, he said. Monreal also said it is up to the passengers or the airlines affected by the runway closure if they want to sue Xiamen Airlines for consequential damages. Dozens of flights were canceled or rerouted as a result of the runway closure, inconveniencing thousands of passengers. Next page

Make Eidl Adha meangingful, Bangsamoro told
By Nat Mariano COMMUNIST leader Jose Ma. Sison, who earlier suggested that President Rodrigo Duterte was in a coma, said Tuesday he was happy that his former student was in good health and that he might live long enough to stand trial for his crimes. “I am pleased to see that Duterte is still alive and that there is a chance of him living long enough to be held accountable for his crimes against the people and be tried by the people´s court or by the International Criminal Court,” said Sison, who earlier observed “a darkness” in the President’s face in a Facebook post Monday. “Unlike him, I do not have any death wish for Duterte. In fact, I wish him to live long enough to receive a warrant of arrest, unlike the so many thousands of victims of Oplans Tokhang and Kapayapaan,” he said, referring to those killed in the government’s war on illegal drugs and its anti-insurgency campaign.
no S. Aquino Jr. died while fighting to restore peace and democracy in the Philippines,” the President said. “His profound love of country has inspired a revolution that altered the course of our nation’s history and gave birth to the freedoms we enjoy today.” He urged Filipinos to take the opportunity to reflect on the late Aquino’s sacrifice, honoring his courage and patriotism during the time of President Ferdinand Marcos. Aquino, who was a political prisoner during the martial law years, was assassinated on the tarmac of the Manila International Airport on Aug. 21, 1983.

It honors the willingness of Ibrahim–Abraham among Catholics–to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God’s command. Lisa Marie David
COTABATO CITY―In their last “Feast of Sacrifice” Tuesday after 29 years, workers of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao were asked to instead support the installation of a Bangsamoro setup, even if it meant losing their jobs. Alzad Sattar, assistant secretary of the ARMM Department of Education, delivered the Eidl Adha or Feast of Sacrifice sermon before thousands of employees who feared they could lose their jobs after Congress passed Republic Act 11054, the Bangsamoro Organic Law, and its signing into law by President Rodrigo Duterte. ARMM Gov. Mujiv Hataman said the essence of Eidl Adha was to recall and even reenact the sacrifices of Abraham and his family thousands of years ago. Eidl Adha is already a regular holiday, but Malacañang declared Aug. 21 again as a non-working holiday pursuant to Next page
