SPEAKER Pantaleon Alvarez on Saturday urged new members of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino in Zamboanga del Sur to support not only PDP candidates but also candidates from other parties who are supportive of the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte. Alvarez urged them to vote for the party’s senatorial bets in the 2019 polls and reject others, particularly those who do not support federalism. He made the call before an estimated 15, 000 local officials and private individuals who took their oath as new PDP members at the Molave Gymnasium in Zamboanga City. Aside from the previous names that Alvarez endorsed as possible senatorial candidates of the ruling party, he also appealed to the new PDP members to support Rep. Pia Cayetano of Taguig City and Cynthia Villar in their senatorial bid. The two lawmakers are both from the Nacionalista Party. “They are not members of the party but they are very supportive of the President,” Alvarez said But before endorsing Cayetano and Villar, Alvarez stressed the Turn to A2

RESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte is on a firing spree to rid the government of corrupt officials, saying more officials in the executive department will be fired after the Holy Week break.
The President made the announcement during the 16th founding anniversary of the Supreme Tribal Council for Peace and Development Inc. in Davao City, adding when he returns to Manila, more executive officials would be on the chopping board. “Do you know how many government officials I have fired already? A lot. I will fire more upon
my return to Manila,” Duterte said. The President, who will spend the Holy Week in Davao, did not give more details on who will be affected by the changes. Earlier, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said the President would make some changes in his Cabinet as he was apparently not satisfied with the performance of some members of his official family.
The President, whose campaign promise included eradicating corruption in the government, said the public could expect more officials to be fired. Duterte has said he’s been spending a lot of time just to clean up government, adding “It’s still graft and corruption. It has been pulling us down through the years... I will not hesitate. I have fired so many before and I will fire so many of you now and in the future.” The Chief Executive has sacked several Cabinet members and government officials over alleged corrupt practices. Duterte fired on Jan. 4 Philippine Maritime Industry Authority chief Marcial Amaro III over alleged junkets.
Amaro maintained his trips abroad were for official business, and a certain business group was behind the move to replace him. Duterte also let go of former Dangerous Drugs Board chief Diniosio Santiago and former Interior Secretary Ismael Sueno for alleged corruption. At the same time, Duterte warned he would punish law enforcers who continue to ignore the law by letting colorum vehicles to operate in exchange for certain amount of consideration. “Several law enforcers are turning a blind eye on colorum vehicles. That regulation against illegally operating units must be fully enforced,” Duterte said when he went Turn to A2

THE Communist Party of the Philippines on Saturday said President Rodrigo Duterte was creating another scheme to silence his critics with his claim that the infamous hit squad of the New People’s Army—“Sparu” or “Sparrow” unit— had been revived. “It seems Duterte is doing some scenario-building to hatch up another tyrannical scheme,” the CPP said in a statement. Earlier this month, Duterte warned soldiers against the supposed resurgence of the Sparrow Unit. PNP chief Director-General Ronald dela Rosa also said the “Sparu” unit of the NPA boosted its operations against government forces after Duterte terminated the peace talks with communist rebels last year. “The PNP’s plan to have a group of ‘seasoned retired police officers’ to train PNP field personnel on ‘anti-sparrow’ operations sound shady, to say the least,” it said. Meanwhile, the military on Saturday claimed it had 28 leaders of the CPP-NPA who surrendered to security forces along with the seizure of at least 51 camps across the country as troops waged relentless anti-insurgency campaign during the first quarter of 2018 following the collapse of peace talks. BAGUIO CHILLS AS SUMMER SETS IN
BAYOMBONG, Nueva Vizcaya— While everyone expects scorching heat and summer getaway plans are being hatched, online weather monitoring stations registered as low as 14 degrees Celsius on Saturday here. In Baguio City, the lowest recorded was 13 degrees Celsius at early morning on the same day. In Mt. Pulag, the highest peak in Luzon, www.weather.com recorded that temperature dropped to 1 degree Celsius early in the morning. The reading as of 8:00 a.m. was placed at 6 degrees Celsius. Tourists tolerated the 90 degrees Celsius coldness of dawn to witness sunrise on top of Mt. Pulag, the highest peak in Luzon. From the base camp, a hike starting at 2:00 a.m. would be the best timing to witness the majestic sea of clouds as dawn breaks. On Jan. 19 last year, a similar temperature drop in Mt. Pulag was reported. “It should be always like this,” a resident of Hungduan, Ifugao commented. Hungduan and Tinoc towns of Ifugao are at the north face of Mt. Pulag, which are places with cool Turn to A2
