We do not have any capabilities to remove them. What country would dare to remove them? —National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon Jr., referring to China’s military structures in the West Philippine Sea

THE Commission on Elections announced Wednesday it was willing to look into the allegation made by Senator Vicente Sotto III that irregularities happened in the May 9, 2016 presidential polls. James Arthur Jimenez, Comelec spokesperson and Information and Education Division director, said the poll body shared Sotto’s call to determine the accuracy of the allegations. “The Commission understands the grave importance of this matter and will, itself, strive to determine the veracity of these claims. To this end, the Comelec will reach out to Senator Sotto and ask for copies of any documents which may be available for close examination and careful evaluation. This is consistent with the Comelec’s commitment to the integrity of Philippine elections,” he said. Meanwhile, lawyer Vic Rodriguez, spokesperson for former senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said in a statement: “Former Senator Bongbong Marcos is happy that he is no longer a voice in the wilderness. He noted that other patriotic leaders and stakeholders have seen the extent of the conspiracy, interference and manipulation of the election results by Smartmatic and have begun to speak out. “We congratulate Senator Tito Sotto for bringing the election anomalies to the attention of the public.” Informed observers have wondered why—despite all the evidence of massive cheating committed by Smartmatic, the Comelec still awarded them the contract to do the same thing all over again in the forthcoming 2019 elections. We have never understood Comelec’s insistence in again awarding Smartmatic despite the multitude transgressions attributed to it. All the issues raised by Sotto need to be investigated and all the questions Next page

Justice drops raps vs 2 terror suspects

HE House committee on justice looks poised to find probable cause to impeach Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno Thursday, but the plenary vote on the Articles of Impeachment will be set aside until the Supreme Court rules on a quo warranto petition against her, a congressional leader said Wednesday.

Sereno, meanwhile decried what she called the Duterte administration’s “persecution of enemies” as efforts to oust her through

impeachment and judicial proceedings gained ground. She also bewailed legal “shortcuts” that she said violate the Constitution—in an apparent reference to the quo warranto petition that the Office of the Solicitor General filed asking the Supreme Court to nullify her appointment in 2012 on the basis that she never qualified for the job. A day ahead of voting, the chairman of the House committee on justice, Oriental Mindoro Rep. Reynaldo Umali, said he believed there was probable cause to impeach Sereno. “A simple reading of the evidence presented and the testimonies of the witnesses and her [Sereno] refusal to controvert these during our extensive hearings will lead us to establish probable cause to impeach Chief Justice Sereno,” Umali said. The justice committee will determine probable cause based

Who would dare to remove Chinese bases in WPS? By Vito Barcelo NATIONAL Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon Jr. admitted Wednesday that the Philippines has no capability to remove the Chinese bases in the West Philippine Sea, and the only paramount solution is to build stronger ties with its allies. Esperon agreed with President Rodrigo Duterte that the government should establish stronger ties with China on the basis of bilateral relations. “That is our policy, to have friendly ties with China, and even with Korea and Japan. But we should not also forget

our long relations with the US, as well as Russia, Australia, New Zealand and India,” Esperon said in a forum. Esperon said it is prudent for the Philippines to maintain “an independent foreign policy that allows us to have our relations with other countries based on our national interests.” Esperon reiterated that the Philippines is not capable of removing the bases that should have been removed by countries with the capability to remove them in the first place. President Duterte appealed to critics to be united on the territorial dispute

in the West Philippine Sea, as he maintained that the Philippines would assert its claims over the area, Malacañang spokesman Harry Roque said on Wednesday. Roque said that while conflicting claims to the territorial dispute have yet to be resolved through negotiation and diplomatic relations, the President will continue to pursue friendly relations with China in contrast to the antagonistic position taken by his predecessor. “The President reiterated that he will not surrender the Philippine territory, but the policy is on matters which are not Next page

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte warned the courts not to interfere should he declare Boracay under a state of calamity to allow the government to hasten its rehabilitation. The warning comes after he issued an ultimatum to local officials to clean up Boracay within six months or he would declare a state of calamity over the world-famous resort destination. “I would caution the courts not to interfere by issuing temporary restraining order because you would just exacerbate the situation,” Duterte said. The President had earlier ordered Interior and Local Government officer-incharge Eduardo Año to solve the beach island’s environmental problems within six months. “If not done within the six-month period, I would be declaring a state of calamity in Boracay,” he said. “I am invoking it. I can order this thing to happen because it’s in the public interest, public safety and public health,” Duterte said. In a speech during the oathtaking of Next page
