Trillanes loses plea, faces trial for 2007 rebellion at Peninsula By Rey E. Requejo SENATOR Antonio Trillanes IV will face trial for rebellion for his participation in the 2007 Manila Peninsula siege, after a Makati court junked his petition to overturn its decision to revive the criminal case against him. In an order dated Dec. 18, 2018, but released only Monday, Judge Elmo Alameda of the Makati City Regional Trial Court Branch 150 dismissed Trillanes’ motion and reaffirmed his order for the senator’s arrest and the issuance of a hold-departure order against him. The rebellion case—which had been dismissed because of an amnesty granted to Trillanes—was revived after President Rodrigo Duterte issued a proclamation voiding that amnesty. The court sustained its finding that Trillanes failed to prove that he has complied with the minimum requirements when he applied for amnesty under the previous administration. Next page

Senate bets down to 82—Comelec

93 groups, 34,000 bets try luck in May polls By Vito Barcelo

HE Commission on Elections has cut down the number of senatorial candidates for the 2019 elections from 152 to 82, and moved the release date for the final list of those qualified to run to the third week of January, a spokesman for the poll body said Monday.

“The number of candidates and party-list groups is expected to drop when we release the final list on the third week of January,” Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said. The release date had been moved back because some candidates and party-list groups that had been disqualified have filed motions for reconsideration that are still being reviewed, he added. For example, 46 groups have filed motions to be included in the list of party-list groups, which now number 93. Next page

Traslacion ‘19: Ban Witness: Baldo plotted to kill ex-mayor on vendors in force

Senator Antonio Trillanes IV

THE Commission on Elections on Monday asked politicians to respect the procession of the Black Nazarene—called the Traslacion—and refrain from using it to campaign. “The Comelec calls on politicians, if possible, to leave these kinds of observances alone,” Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said in a mix of Filipino and English. “There is a time for politics. The campaign period is coming up very fast and many politicians have already been campaigning anyway. What is one day to just give Filipinos a chance to focus on this very important part of their community life?” The Philippine Coast Guard, meanwhile, said it has beefed up security preparations for the annual Traslacion.

MAYOR Carlwyn Baldo of Daraga, Albay also planned to kill his predecessor, the late mayor Gerry Jaucian, before Baldo was tagged by the Philippine National Police as the mastermind of the killing of Ako Bicol Party-list Rep. Rodel Batocabe in December. This was according to Emmanuel Jaduvar, the PNP’s main witness to the

slaying of Batocabe, investigators said Monday. This developed as the authorities tried to figure out who would receive the P50million reward for the capture of the gunmen that killed the lawmaker and his bodyguard before New Year’s Day. Also, the results of the PNP Crime Next page

Reds profiling: 3 cops probed for info leak By Francisco Tuyay AT least three police intelligence officers were sacked for allegedly leaking the results of their discreet profiling on members of the Alliance of Concerned Teachers, Philippine National Police chief Oscar Albayalde said Monday. three spy cops, but said they were from Manila’s Station 3, Quezon City’s Station 6 and a station in Zambales, with ranks of senior inspector to chief inspector.
