TRUMP TRUMPED. In this file photo, Philippine and American troops participate in the annual Balikatan military exercises, with the two presidents (inset) shaking hands, before the Filipino leader said Washington was insulting Manila’s sovereignty. By MJ Blancaflor and Maricel V. Cruz PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte said he has rejected the pleas of American President Donald Trump to “save” the Visiting Forces Agreement, a military pact between Manila and Washington that Duterte seeks to terminate. “Trump and others are trying to save the Visiting Forces Agreement. I said, ‘I do not want.’ The Americans are really rude,” President Duterte said in his speech Monday. “They are really insulting. Bordering on trashing our sovereignty,
they have reached the limit, and so somebody has to remind them,” the commander-in-chief said. Earlier in the day, Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said Duterte has not consulted his Cabinet members on his decision to terminate the VFA. Panelo said Duterte only seeks out the advice of his Cabinet on matters in which he has doubts. “The President is the chief architect [of government]. He does not need to consult. Excellent president and a lawyer. If he has doubts on certain areas, maybe that’s the time he
SoKor film makes Oscars history MOVIE history was made at the Oscars Sunday as South Korea’s black comedy “Parasite” became the first non-English-language film to win the best picture award, Hollywood’s biggest prize of all. “Parasite,” about a poor South Korean family infiltrating a wealthy household, won a total of four awards, defying the received wisdom that the Academy would overlook a subtitled Asian movie. “I thought I was done for the day and ready to relax,” filmmaker Bong Joonho said upon winning best director honors, before promising to “drink until next morning.” But a bigger shock was in store as the
movie beat frontrunner “1917” to win best picture. “It feels like a very opportune moment in history is happening right now,” producer Kwak Sin-ae told an audience of Tinseltown A-listers, who cheered the film’s wins throughout the night at the Dolby Theatre. “Parasite” also won the Oscar for best international feature, and became the first Asian film to scoop best original screenplay. “We never write to represent our countries,” Bong said earlier in the night when he took the screenplay award. “But this is [the] very first Oscar to South Korea. In a recent Senate committee hearing on the termination of VFA, Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. said that he, along with Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana, was not consulted on the possible effects of scrapping the agreement, which grants the US jurisdiction over American troops accused of crimes in the Philippines. Panelo, who is also Duterte’s chief legal counsel, said that members of the Cabinet fully support the President’s move—even though Locsin had Next page

the virus on the cruise ship docked off Yokohama and were being treated in a Japanese hospital. “The DFA, through the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo confirms that four other Filipinos aboard Diamond Princess tested positive for the novel coronavirus Next page
