BEFORE YOU START TRAIL RUNNING OUR planet is a big one. And if you’re planning to run on it, don’t just stick on roads and tracks, take the off the beaten path Trail running, which is a sport that combines running and hiking on trails, is gaining popularity among runners, hikers, nature lovers, and outdoor adventurers. It offers a spiritual and natural way to be active while reveling in the beauty of the environment.
ESPITE unconventional work schedule and demanding responsibilities, employees in the business process outsourcing industry still find time to travel. “With the abundance of travel destinations in the Philippines and generally increasing household income within the BPO sector, a lot of young professionals are enticed to explore the outdoors,” notes Teleperformance Philippines communications and marketing director Marilyn Ventenilla. She adds, “This is why at Teleperformance, we encourage our people to enjoy their vacations. They can also take advantage of special discounted rates for travel, dining, fashion, leisure and wellness activities through our Employee Perks program.” Young employees in BPO companies are some of the many travelers who are experienced in backpacking, which facilitates the most affordable means to get from one tourist spot to another. Some of agents at Teleperformance share their tried and tested tips for those new to backpacking.
Prepare your gear
You’re not a backpacker if you don’t have a backpack. Make sure you get the right size for you. It should be durable, preferably water-resistant, and has comfortable shoulder straps since you will have to carry it from one destination to another. Backpacking involves a lot of walking, which might be grueling for the feet. Wear a pair of comfortable sneakers or training shoes. Also, bring a pair of slippers—you’ll need them when you hit the beach or when you need to go around short distances from where you’re staying.
Pack light
Consider your destination to know which items to pack. If you are heading for the beach, just bring a couple of beach shorts or swimsuits, and tank tops and shorts. When you’re out trekking along mountain slopes, a disposable raincoat will come in handy.
Don’t forget the essentials
Soap, shampoo, sunscreen, tissue, hand sanitizer, first-aid kit—have them in small portions, since you can refill them at bus stops and convenience stores on your way. Make sure to bring your vitamins and medicines for colds, fever, allergy, diarrhea, headache and muscle pain, too.
Choose a durable and water-resistant backpack that can carry all your essentials
Share a room
For solo travelers and small groups, it’s better to stay in a hostel. Not only is it cheaper, but it also offers the opportunity for you to make new friends during your trip. If you want somewhere else more private, check on available rooms for rent in online platforms. If you are the outdoorsy type and want to commune with nature, bring a tent and camp out.

HIV TEST GEARED TOWARDS THE YOUTH
Let’s TestMNL offers a free, fast, and confidential HIV screening
LATEST Department of Health data revealed there are 2,160 individuals aged 15-34 who have contracted human immunodeficiency virus in January to March of this year alone. The alarming rate of HIV infection among the youth sector has urged LoveYourself Inc. to hold a free, fast, and confidential HIV screening at Victoria Court, Malate today, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. The HIV testing, dubbed “Let’s TestMNL” specifically targets youth or those who would take the test for the first time; but nonetheless, people of all ages are invited. “We are aggressive in bringing this HIV testing to the youth because of their apparent vulnerability to the causes of the disease. And most importantly, only through testing that we can detect if one has virus,” says
LoveYourself executive director Ronivin Pagtakhan. Pagtakhan strongly encourages college students and those in their early 20s to support the movement of knowing their HIV status. LoveYourself, Inc. is a non-government advocacy group that offers free and confidential HIV testing and treatment, counseling and peer education, and initiating programs and projects towards HIV-AIDS awareness. The organization, in cooperation with the Department of Health-Research Institute for Tropical Medicines (RITM), has two operational testing facilities: LoveYourself Anglo along Shaw Boulevard, and LoveYourself Uni in Taft Ave., Gil Puyat.
