OF TODAY’S YOUTH CAN’T seem to keep a conversation with someone young or young-ish? Did they, at one point, say something which you were pretty sure was grammatically incorrect or mistakenly used a word or just talked strange English?

UCH like many of today’s illustrators, Niccolo Balce started from scratch. His first project as a kid was crayon drawings of F1 cars—inspired by Atari game Pole Position—on the walls of their house.

Seeing his potential, his architect dad supported him by giving him proper equipment and sketchbooks, which he filled with drawings influenced by his ‘80s childhood.

With a goal to become an illustrator, Balce took up Bachelor of Fine Arts major in Visual Communications at the University of the Philippines and taught himself Photoshop, Illustrator, and Flash on the side.

Years later, the kid who used to draw on the walls have become an illustrator whose works have been published in several comic book publications and magazines (Viper Comics and Xbox Nation Magazine), were featured in art books (Exotique 4), trading cards (Street Fighter), mobile and social games (Disney Interactive), and have won him major recognition (1st Place in Wizard’s “Bayonetta Re-envisioned” Competition).

His creations were even pirated in France, something that made him feel terrible and flattered at the same time. But “I’ll probably seek legal action the next time it happens,” he told Manila Standard.

At 36, Balce, also known as Robotnicc (a play on Sonic The Hedgehog 2 villain Dr. Robotnik and his nickname “Nicc”), has built himself pretty impressive credentials to back him up as he progresses into the industry and makes a name in California, where he and his wife Jamie are currently based.

For three years (2011-2013), Balce worked his own magic at Disney where he was a senior artist for Disney Interactive. He was responsible for concept and production art for the graphics used in Armies of Magic and Pirates of the Caribbean: Isles of War. During his Disney stint, the Filipino artist shared how he felt a “happy disbelief” working for something he only dreamt of as a kid.

“Never thought I’d actually get in but it happened and it’s done,” he enthused.

Balce then worked for mobile gaming company RockYou, drawing environments for Kitchen Scramble.

He is currently a contract illustrator for Facebook, while doing many other personal projects on the side.

Always ready to evolve and aim for higher goals, Balce said he now dreams of doing visual development for an animated TV series or an animated film.

“In my free time I’m taking up workshops and doing personal work that would hopefully take me there,” he related.

With ample experience, impressive talent, and right attitude, there is no telling what Balce would be drawing next. One thing’s certain, though, we would be looking forward to watching an animated TV series or film featuring a Robotnicc creation.

MORE WORK, LESS PLAY? BUSY SCHEDULE DECREASES LEISURE TIME

T SEEMS like the “work hard, play hard” mantra does not ring true to everyone.

As everyday life becomes increasingly busy in today’s society, the amount of leisure time people have is diminishing, according to The World Play Shortage Report, which asked 10,100 people from 22 countries.

The study, commissioned by home appliance brand Beko, found that the global average leisure time of a person in an average week is less than 21 hours, shorter compared to 24 hours of older generation.

When it comes to free time, nearly 30 percent of adults have less than 10 hours per week, and 36 percent have less than two hours per day, “as the demands of modern life start to eat into free time.”

It also revealed that young people in the early years of their careers are particularly affected by their busy lives, as the study found that those 22 years old are the most likely to cancel evening leisure plans due to work, at 42 percent.

The consequence of this practice however comes back after a few years as people aged 38 crave the chance to have more play time in their lives, with 63 percent wishing they had more leisure time rather than money.

“The World Play Shortage Report stands as a powerful source for how modern life shapes our wellbeing and highlights the lack of play time,” says

Beko group head of Communications Zeynep Özbil. “The report shows people lead busy and often unplanned lives and this has a critical negative impact on our leisure time.”

With leisure time increasingly under threat, spending time with family has become more important with two in three or 64 percent of respondents choosing this as their favorite activity. This is followed by relaxing at home at 62 percent, and socializing with friends at 46 percent.

Meanwhile, a staggering 70 percent of those surveyed do not rank playing sport or going to gym or exercising as one of their favorite leisure time activities, and nearly a third or 30 percent admit they never exercise.

As the official premium partner of FC Barcelona, Beko launched “The Official partner of play” campaign that highlights the shared values of play between the club and the brand.

“We understand people’s everyday needs and provide meaningful time-saving solutions, so that they can simply enjoy their unpredictable, busy lives. We do hope these findings will actually remind us all how we need to ‘play’ to live our lives to the fullest,” emphasizes Özbil.

Respondents of this survey were from Algeria, Australia, Austria, Bolivia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Jordan, Morocco, Norway, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, United Kingdom, and Uruguay.

MAGINE Gerald Anderson, Paolo Avelino, and Matteo Guidicelli behind the kitchen counter half-naked while preparing your meal for the day. Hot, right?

That’s what just happened in a recent event in Makati where the three Kapamilya stars were introduced as celebrity ambassadors of a popular tuna brand’s summer campaign. Gerald, Paolo and Matteo presented their kitchen skills before some members of the press wearing nothing on top but their aprons.

The trio recently collaborated for a TV Commercial that promotes healthy eating and clean lifestyle. The ad features the hunky actors as “hot cooks” as they respectively present their favorite recipes to a sexy, healthy bod.

“Breakfast for me is very important. And I wanted a dish that’s a healthier take on the typical Pinoy breakfast so I came up with this super delicious Tuna Silog,” shares Gerald.

The first PBB Teen Big Third Placer took a time off to participate in the event being an advocate of active lifestyle. He recently competed in the

Ironman 70.3 in Subic then later participated in in the Los Angeles marathon.

Just like the sport he’s currently passionate about, Gerald will play a role of a triathlete in the upcoming primetime series Ikaw Lang ang Iibigin. The drama, which also stars Jake Cuenca, is Gerald’s reunion project with Kim Chiu.

“I’m always on the go. I love having a lean sandwich because it’s easy to prepare just like my Tuna Egg Salad Sandwich on wheat bread which is healthy yet very satisfying,” Matteo shares.

The singer-actor, who’s also a decorated karting racer, has been an effective celebrity endorser of the popular tuna brand. Like Gerald, Matteo is into triathlon, too (hence his chiseled physique).

He had his first triathlon two years ago.

“Tuna Pancit Canton is the ultimate, yummy comfort food – something you can make in a jiffy,” Paulo declares.

Although he’s not into triathlon yet, Paolo enjoys wall climbing and jogging. He said one does not have to go to a gym to keep fit. He makes time to work out even during his tapings by doing a few push-ups and sit-ups in between takes.

“Like Gerald, Mateo and Paulo, Century Tuna is very versatile. You can use it in different dishes, allowing you to be creative in creating your own recipe to sexy,” relates Greg Banzon, Century Pacific Food, Inc. VP & General Manager during the event.

KOREAN superstar Lee Min Ho, popular among Filipinos for his role as Gu Jun Pyo in the hit series Boys Over Flowers, will be out of the limelight for two years to start his mandatory military service next month.

Earlier this year, rumors circulated that Lee Min Ho would be enlisting in March or April, but his agency MYM Entertainment denied this by saying they had not received the actor’s enlistment letter. But on Tuesday, the talent agency confirmed that that Lee Min Ho will begin service on May 12.

Military service is mandatory for every South Korean male between the age of 18 and 35.

They are required to perform two years of military service, with the rationale being the continued threat from North Korea. When the men enlist, they receive four weeks of basic military training and serve for 21 months at an army base, which is usually located in a rural, secluded area.

The marines serve for 23 months, and air force for 24 months.

Lee Min Ho will be assigned at Gangnam-gu office as a public service officer. The talent agency said that 29-year-old actor has been assigned to a noncombat position due to an injury sustained in a 2006 car accident with fellow actor Jung Il-woo.
