No year of the cat? Here’s why WHY isn’t there a Year of the Cat in the Chinese astrological calendar? Feline fanatics may have wondered about that for centuries now, as the Chinese Lunar New Year dawns today, Feb. 16, with the first day of the Year of the Dog. The Philippines has declared it a special non-working holiday. The Dog is the 11th of the 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac, but it could have been the cat’s place, if one Chinese legend about these animals is to be believed. As posted on the website YourChineseAstrology.com, the story goes that all the animals wanted to be part of the zodiac when the Jade Emperor decreed he would select the zodiac signs. In a press briefing, Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque said the Philippines will assert its sovereign rights over the Philippine Rise and would give Filipino names to each underwater feature found there. “Giving names does not mean they are claiming it. China recognizes that they have no rights at the Philippine Rise and they recognize our sovereign rights,” Roque said. “The naming does not entail sovereign rights because sovereign rights [are the] exclusive right to explore and exploit, conduct scientific research, lay submarine cables and build artificial islands,” he added. Roque said the Philippines would not use the Chinese names and use Filipino ones instead. China had earlier named four seamounts Jinghao, Tianbao, Haidonquing, and Jujiu; and the Cuiqiao Hill. The Cuiqiao Hill and Jujiu Seamount form

China was one of the countries that conducted scientific research at the Philippine Rise, known internationally as Benham Rise, before President Rodrigo Duterte ordered a stop to all foreign activities in the area. Roque expressed hope that China will not take it against the Philippines if the Filipinos will not use the Chinese names. “It is clear that Philippine Rise is under our sovereign rights. We don’t see basis for China to be alarmed with our position that we will insist on our naming rights,” Roque said. Roque also believed that the issue will not affect the improving relations between China and the Philippines under the Duterte administration. Roque said the Department of Foreign Affairs is now nominating a Filipino

PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte is willing to pay a reward of P25,000 for every New People’s Army member killed by non-communists, raising the previous bounty of P20,000. The President declared this Tuesday in front of a crowd, including city and municipal mayors and military personnel at the Brigadier General Benito Ebuen Air Base in Cebu City. Speaking in the Sugbuhanon language, Duterte asked why these people—the New People’s Army members—follow Communist Party of the Philippines founder Jose Maria Sison who was living a comfortable life in The Netherlands while his armed rebels were in the mountains starving and fighting the government for what he called a pointless ideology.
