IMPROVING TRAFFIC FLOW. The government, grabbing the

atrociously de-energizing vehicular traffic flow in the metropolis which has become a daily nightmare (above), wants to construct at least three modern transport hubs outside the National Capital Region—the first to be inaugurated next April—and prevent provincial buses from round the capital to pass through the 24-kilometer Epifanio de los Santos Avenue. MORE REASONS TO MAKE FILIPINOS HOPEFUL IN 2018 By John Paolo Bencito MALACAÑANG on Saturday called on the public to help the administration in laying down the foundations “of a prosperous and peaceful nation” while setting aside the politics that tended to slow down economic growth. Saying the “economy is on a roll,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque expressed that “the prospects for the future look bright.” “Let us continue to sustain the pace of our economic growth by improving governance and setting aside politics that tends to divide the nation.” Roque said. Roque expressed confidence in the

A statue of a dog, with a resemblance to US President Donald Trump, is seen by shoppers at a shopping mall in Taiyuan, in China’s northern Shanxi province on Friday. By John Paolo Bencito and Joel E. Zurbano THERE will be no whitewash on the Mandaluyong shooting incident, Malacañang vowed Saturday, in reference to an apparent case of use of excessive force by trigger-happy cops, who fired at the wrong people this week, Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said in a radio interivew. “What is important is we will have an impartial and fair investigation, which will not just involve the police but people who tipped police off, Andanar added. Earlier on Friday, Malacañang vowed there would be a thorough investigation after Mandaluyong police opened fire on the wrong vehicle and killed two people, including a woman on the way to hospital on Shaw Boulevard Thursday night. “[The] matter will be investigated fully even if there appears to be excessive force utilized by police authorities,” Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque said. The policemen involved have been disarmed and their movements have been restricted, he added. The incident occurred on Thursday night when police were called Turn to A2

PH-CHINA TIES ENTER ANOTHER 'GOLDEN ERA' By Rey E. Requejo THE ongoing dispute between the Philippines and China over contested waters in the South China Sea, particularly in some areas in the West Philippine Sea, did not hamper the warming up of diplomatic relations between the two countries, which President Rodrigo Duterte himself described as another “Golden Era.” For China, “the year 2017 has been momentous and memorable for both of our great nations,” declared Political Counsellor Tan Qingsheng of the Chinese Embassy, in his speech during the Christmas Party it hosted with the members of the Philippine media. “The year 2017 did witness significant achievements in our bilateral relations. Under the strategic vision and concerted efforts by both our leaders, China-Philippines relations have been building on the historic turnaround and ushering in a new era, or better known as another ‘Golden Era’ pointed out by President Duterte,” Tan noted. CHINA MALL CASHES IN ON YEAR OF DOG BEIJING—A mall in northern China has installed a larger-than-life canine statue with more than a passing resemblance to US President Donald Trump to welcome the coming Year of the Dog. The giant pooch towers above shoppers in Taiyuan, capital of Shanxi province, sporting a slick golden pompadour, angled brows and a red scarf with one index finger raised in a distinctly Trumpian manner. As he was born in 1946, Trump, who has been accused of having more bark than bite, is a dog under the Chinese zodiac—a trait which he shares with his predecessors George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.
