OURTEEN-YEAR-OLD Reynaldo de Guzman, the companion of slain Carl Angelo Arnaiz, was found floating in a creek in Gapan, Nueva Ecija Tuesday morning, 19 days after he went missing.
VICTIM’S COMPANION. Reynaldo de Guzman, the 14-year-old teener (inset) last seen accompanying Carl Angelo Arnaiz, the teenager killed by cops in Caloocan City, has been found dead with 30 stab wounds in Gapan, Nueva Ecija, 105 kms away from their house in Cainta, Rizal. He was last seen with Arnaiz on Aug.17 to buy midnight snacks near their house in Cainta. Arnaiz’s body was found 10 days after at a morgue in Caloocan City, allegedly killed in a shootout in Caloocan City after purportedly robbing a taxi driver.
De Guzman’s body bore 30 stab wounds and his face was wrapped in masking tape when it was found at the Kinamatayan Kabayo Creek in Brgy. San Roque at 11 a.m. Tuesday. De Guzman’s parents identified the body at the funeral parlor in Gapan town. “They killed the boy mercilessly,” said Reynaldo’s mother, Lina Gabriel, in Filipino, tears trickling down her face as she lifted
the cloth cover of his body. “They riddled him with stab wounds.” The boy’s father, Ed, said they identified the body through a mark on his leg and a wart on his knee. They learned about their son’s whereabouts through a tip from a friend on social media. Lina said Reynaldo left their home in Cainta, Rizal, to have a midnight snack with Arnaiz on Aug. 17. Next page
Drug war flawed? Bishop sees no end to slays By Vito Barcelo, John Paolo Bencito and Macon RamosAraneta A CATHOLIC bishop expressed fear Wednesday that more young people would be killed if the government won’t change its hardline approach to the problem of ille-
gal drugs. Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David said the government’s anti-drug war was naïve, seriously flawed, and needs serious evaluation and rethinking. He said the killings of 19-year-old Carlo Angelo Arnaiz and 17-year-old Kian Loyd delos Santos were not
isolated cases as the police claimed. “If they don’t stop the killing, we’ll have more Kians and Carlos,” said David, who is also the incoming vice president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines. Police said Arnaiz robbed a taxi driver in the city before
engaging them in a shootout. However, an autopsy revealed that Arnaiz was tortured and handcuffed before he was shot to death. “The case of Carl Angelo Arnaiz was murder, plain and simple except that it was committed by our law enforcers. That gives a chilling effect,” David said. Next page
Lawyers warn Congress of impeachment misuse
SERENO
THE Integrated Bar of the Philippines on Wednesday urged Congress not to abuse its impeachment power against officials of constitutional bodies as it gears to begin the proceedings against Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno and Commission on Elections chairman Andres Bautista. The 55-000 strong man-
datory organization of lawyers warned that an abuse of the impeachment process would be unconstitutional. “It is an assault upon the Constitution and the very ideal of limited government that is enshrined in it when impeachment is misused as the very tool to undermine judicial independence,” IBP national president Abdiel
Dan Elijah Fajardo said in a statement. “May we express the hope that impeachment as a process is not being brandished as a weapon of submission, thereby defeating constitutional design that the judicial branch be insulated from considerations other than the facts and the law in Next page

China planted flag on PH isle, Magdalo says A STAUNCH critic of President Rodrigo Duterte on Wednesday revealed the presence of a Chinese fishing vessel that planted a Chinese flag near Philippinecontrolled Kota Island. Magdalo Party-list Rep. Gary Alejano said he had received another information that it was a Chinese fishing vessel with Bow Number 23168 that planted the flag.
“The information came from the same informant who reported the presence of a Chinese flotilla on Pagasa Island, which was later on admitted by the Philippine and Chinese governments,” said Alejano, a former marine officer. Two weeks ago, he said a Chinese flag mounted on a three-meter high steel pipe was planted by a Chinese
vessel on a sandbar seven nautical miles northeast off Kota Island towards the end of July. The sandbar is part of the network of sandbars, coral reefs and atolls between Kota and Panata Islands occupied and controlled by the Philippines.
