‘We’re victims here,’ kinsmen tell PNP chief THE family of 17-year-old Kian delos Santos, who was shot dead by Caloocan police on Aug. 16, on Monday rejected the claim of Philippine National Police chief Ronald dela Rosa that the Grade 11 student delivered drugs to his father and uncle. Kian’s father, Saldy delos Santos, said he and his family were willing to take a drug test to prove they were not users, and asked Dela Rosa for a fair investigation. Dela Rosa on Sunday presented a supposed drug pusher on Sunday who claimed to have had transactions with Kian. “Please be fair,” Saldy said, addressing the police chief in Filipino on radio dzMM. “Have mercy on the child because we know nothing [about drugs]. We are the victims here. We are the ones you should be helping.”

9 dead, 10 hurt in Sayyaf attack on Basilan town ISLAMIST gunmen killed nine people and injured 10 others as they attacked a village in Maluso, Basilan at dawn Monday, burning houses in which women and children were sleeping, police said. About 60 members of the notorious Abu Sayyaf kidnap-forransom group entered a town in their stronghold on Basilan and began shooting, local police chief
John Cundo told AFP. “This is an act of terrorism and cowardice. When our forces engaged them in a 45-minute firefight and they felt our numbers and volume of fire they backed away and fled,” Cundo said. “What is unfortunate is that women and children were affected as they were still sleeping when this happened.”
The militants burned four houses and a day-care center in Maluso, Cundo said, adding police and the military were conducting “hot pursuit” operations against the gunmen. Supt. Christopher Panapan, Basilan provincial police director, identified the fatalities as Radzma Arakani, Radsma Hassan, Camina dela Cruz, Reynaldo Esparcia,
Marktan Jalad, Ajid Aminulla, Ryan Joplo, Baby Arakani, and Andok Haikin Kato. Injured were Lokaya Arakani, Joey dela Cruz, Julhari Arajani, Mariam dela Cruz, Jessie dela Cruz, Tarhata Arakani, Solo Arakani, Abel Laping, Roderick Villarin, and Grace Fernandez.
